Best way to move from Greenlake to the CD?

It's been six years since we moved, and we have three times as much stuff now (not kidding). Last time we moved ourselves, and broke our backs, and I vowed I would never do that again. But I don't know the best way to move.

I feel okay with doing some of it myself (packing, etc.) but don't want to do any heavy lifting, and really feel like we're too old to ask our friends to pitch in. But I also don't want to spend thousands of dollars on a professional move.

Any advice?

We used Adam's moving service last year, and they were really good. Reasonably priced & efficient. We packed things up ourselves. During the move, we left the heavy items to them, and helped load/unload the lighter boxes and items, which they were fine with. You can get an estimate from them in advance, on how long the move will take and how much it will cost, based on the size of your apartment/house.

I used a professional moving company the last time I moved. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the company I used as this was a couple of years ago. I just looked through my email from that time frame hoping to find something, but no such luck.

I will say that having someone else move my stuff was it was the best decision I ever made. I live on the 4th floor of an apartment building that has no elevator and I have a lot of stuff - mostly heavy and awkwardly shaped art supplies and equipment. I packed everything myself and also "staged" my place so everything was in the front room and ready to be loaded into the truck when the movers arrived. I paid less than $400 for two guys and a truck - they loaded the truck at my old place, drove it to the new place, and unloaded it in my new apartment (including up 4 flights of stairs), and all I had to do was tell them where to put things. I honestly think they should have charged more, but I did tip the guys really well.

If you're thinking of going with a moving company, I'd check their reviews on Yelp before choosing.

You can direct hire some people from The Millionair Club for $10-12 an hour per person and rent your own truck. They won't be professional movers, but I've found them to be nice and definitely adequate for day labor-type stuff. They can load and unload your truck for you (make sure and pad your furniture).

Good luck! We moved ourselves recently too, and it was definitely a pain in the ass. Some extra hands will make a big difference.

In other cities, I've known people to go find where out-of-work guys hang around for day jobs and hire those guys as movers, so maybe you can find the Seattle equivalent, or put up an ad on Craigslist. Or if you know anyone with teenage or college-aged kids (or friends) who could use some extra cash. Any of these would be good for heavy lifting, so long as you were willing to do all the packing and supervising.

You can also try selling some of the stuff you've accumulated-- how much of it do you really need? That will help offset some of the costs of moving and make moving cheaper, if you go the professional route. I always purge as much stuff as possible before moving.

    Super Friends , 206.302.8833!

I moved from Ballard to Capitol Hill about 16 months ago and these guys were great: strong, quick and efficient. They over-estimated how long the whole move would take and so my cost was less than I had planned on. They billed by 15-minute increments, as I recall.

    From their e-mail:

We would be delighted to help you with your move. Our services include two gentlemen, truck, furniture pads, and any other necessary equipment (tape, tie downs, tools) it will take to make your move a smooth and efficient one for $100/hr. After looking through your inventory list a strong estimate would be 2-3 hours leaving you with a total of $200-$300. If you would like to go ahead and book with us please send another email confirming your move and please choose a time of your liking as we have availability any time of the day!

p.s.we do not wear capes on the job 8-)

    PURGE.

Reduce. Recycle. Yard Sale. Re-evaluate. If too precious to part with, schlepp some stuff to a storage place and not have to move it again. Trade for less-backbreaking stuff (ex: do you really need the 4 person party couch/sofa bed or could you live more simply with a love seat?).

Too old to ask friends? Understood. Hire the neighbor kids or wrangle up some younger cousins in trade for a beer/pizza party or some hourly cash.

Put an AD in craigslist: better yet, troll the existing ads as there's tons of people offering to help move in exchange for shiny rocks.

And as a last resort, you could support the home-depot-parking-lot union of unemployed latino guys.
