Why does my boyfriend get lightheaded when we have sex?

For some reason if my boyfriend is in any position other than horizontal during sex he gets really light-headed. One time he actually fainted (on Valentine's day, it was a bummer). This only really happens when he's upright and really turned on, and results in him having to lie down and no longer being turned on at all.

It kind of limits our sexual position options and I'm kind of worried, but he won't listen when I say he should see a doctor about it. Any idea why this happens?

Get his blood pressure checked. Sounds like it might be low or high.

Without a doubt he needs to talk to a doctor: this is NOT within the range of 'normal' and should be diagnosed ASAP.

How does he do at exercise while standing?
    Running/ bicycling?
Is he disproportionately large (relative to his body)? i.e. is a whole lotta blood going 'down there' to make him lightheaded?

See a doc. The country doctor on 19th if you cannot afford a regular insurance-fed doc.

I'd bet it's a blood pressure/flow thing. I pass out randomly at times and my blood pressure evidently just crashes when it happens. Tell him not to move too quickly and keep well hydrated. Also probably good not to do it either on an empty stomach or right after eating.

I agree that he should see the doctor, but as someone who's fainted several times for no apparent reason (although most of the times I've fainted I had just started my period) I can tell you that it's likely the doctor won't find the cause.

I've been treated by paramedics; I've gone to the doctor the next day, and I've gone to the ER the same day. I've had an EEG and an EKG and everything seems fine but I still pass out every once in awhile. Afterwards my BP is low and my pulse is fast, and I feel really nauseous and sweat for about a half hour; then I usually throw up and start feeling better immediately.

Still, make him go to the doctor. Also have him drink lots of water, cause dehydration can be a factor. Another factor might be either bending the knees or locking the knees, which constricts blood in the legs and can cause fainting.

Check out the vasovagal resonse wikipedia page for a list of possible triggers.

I agree with Bauhaus, get the blood pressure checked. Also, get him to be tested for anemia, especially if he's a vegetarian/vegan and isn't careful about his diet.

This is not a small problem that will go away/get better with time. It could be something easily and cheaply treated, or it could signal really bad things going on in his body that need prompt treatment to avoid injury or death. A doctor will be able to figure it out.

If he has insurance and won't go to a doctor, you do have an alternative to make him go, but he won't like it. Wait until he passes out again like he did on Valentine's Day, and then call 911. This is a last-ditch effort, but fainting spells can signal something significant.
