Great old school tween movie?

I'd like to show a move to a group of 10-12 year olds who've honestly earned a reprieve from their daily grind.
I'd like to find something that has merit and that predates this age group by at least 10-20. In the past I've been able to blow their with the anachronistic Karate Kid but now that it is being re-made all I will hear about is "this isn't the Karate Kid".
So much for the wisdom of Mr. Miagi.
Someone suggested the Goonies. While this might be great fun I'm looking to avoid the fat kid / fart jokes genre.

Thanks

-Journey of Natty Gann. ( It's about a young teen girl who journeys by foot from Chicago to Seattle during the depression to find her pops.)

    Also:

-Stand by Me (though now that I think of it, there are some fat kids jokes)
    -Ferris Bueller's day off
    -War Games
    -Freaky Friday (the original)
    -Back to the Future
    -Beetlejuice
    -Flight of the Navigator
    -The Dark Crystal
    -Labyrinth
    -Pee Wee's Big Adventure
    -Tron

Explorers is an amazing movie from 85 staring River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke. It's about 3 boys who build a space ship after one of them learns how to make a force field through a dream.

I think there are a lot of great suggestions out already, so here are some that haven't been mentioned.

Time Bandits - Terry Gilliam at his most accessible, I remember watching this movie over and over on sick days at home.

Willow - Might be a little too action-y to have the broad appeal that you're going for, but this is another classic from when I was child of the '80s.

Gremlins - A mix of creepy and cute, another quintessential '80s movie.

Raising Arizona - It's been awhile since I've seen it so I can't recall if anything age-inappropriate occurs, all I remember is how funny it is.

Night of the Hunter - This might be a stretch, but if you think your audience is open to Buster Keaton, they might also be into this noir-ish thriller where Robert Mitchum plays a criminal posing as an evangelical priest who ingratiates himself w/ a family to find a heisted cache of $10,000 that only a couple of young siblings know the location of.

The 400 Blows - The best movie about being a juvenile delinquent ever made.

Paper Moon - Gorgeous and heartbreaking, the relationship between a Depression-era con man and the even cagier little girl he may/may not be the father of, is both a great example of the precocious intelligence of children and how that intelligence doesn't shield them from the needs and feelings of being a kid.

Reading these other posts makes me realize I need to watch the journey of natty gann again, I remember having such a crush on the girl in that movie. I guess I'm still looking for that kind of girl to this day, a train riding, husky owning tomboy with a sense of adventure.

Some of the other movies I loved as a kid that haven't been mentioned:
    the boy who could fly
    lucas
    the wilderness family 1 & 2
    the last starfighter
    a far off place
    Annie (1982)
    Never cry wolf
    Swiss family robinson
    White fang
    An american tail
    Innerspace
    Witches (1990)
    The money pit
    Big
The man with one red shoe
    Splash
    Dragnet
    The Burbs
    Radio Flyer
    the secret of nimh
    Mac and me
    Legend
    the last unicorn
    The red balloon

    Some slightly more recent movies:
    Honey, I shrunk the kids
    Tuck everlasting

And if you're into animation I'd suggest literally anything ever made by hayao miyazaki:
    castle in the sky
    ponyo
    princess mononoke
nausicaa and the valley of the wind
    spirited away
    howls moving castle
    kiki's delivery service
    the cat returns
    my neighbor totoro

And most importantly nobody can discount the majesty of the greatest movie ever created in the history of humanity:

    Elf

Cloak and Dagger. Old movie about a kid doing spy stuff. Old school video games, Dabney Coleman playing 2 roles, walkie-talkies.

Also, +1 on The Explorers. Good stuff.

    The Goonies ARE good enough.

    ;)

    also:

BIG (can't believe no one's brought it up)
    Adventures In Babysitting (shue!)
Mask (eric stoltz + cher = FTW)
    The Hobbit (rankin bass)
    Secret of NIHM (bluth!)
    Watership Down
    Rudy
    The Black Cauldron
    Fox & the Hound
    The Wave (tv movie)
Oliver / or even Oliver & Company
    Legend
    Labrynth
    Swing Kids
    Sound of Music
    Grease
    Three Men and a Baby
    Gleaming the Cube

If you are jones'in for Karate Kid type stuff, why not Rocky?
Also: there was a fencing movie that focused on the grownups a bit more, with F Murray Abraham and Eric Roberts (don't recall the name now though...)

or If you want a very authentic 'remember-it-forever' moment:

When I was 14 our teacher showed us Harold and Maude.

At that age, my friends and I obsessed over:
    -The Black Stallion
-Labyrinth (get this one in early before they become completely distracted by Bowie's package)
    -Ferris Bueller
    -The Last Unicorn
    -War Games
-Legend (While I thought it was badass as a kid, it's kind of ridiculous now)
-The Princess Bride (and if they like it enough, the book is just as good)

Maybe pre-screen it, but I remember watching Sneakers (with Robert Redford) a ton of times when I was fairly young. It has River Phoenix in it so it's marginally a tween movie.

Everyone else has wonderful suggestions as well.

The Cat From Outer Space, vintage Disney with Sandy Duncan, cats and other famous people in a great 1960's style.

The Mosquito Coast, River Phoenix and Harrison Ford

The Nutty Professor...the original Flubber movie...super awesome!

The original Parent Trap with Haley Mills. So much better!!!

The Music Man with Shirley Jones as Marian the librarian and little Ronnie Howard as her brother. A great film with great music.

Roman Holiday...ahhhhhh...Audrey Hepburn. Not sure if boys would like it.

These kids have seen E.T. haven't they??? If they haven't, they need to!!!

Now and Then. It came out when I was twelve, and shortly thereafter became "the movie where Devon Sawa runs through the woods naked". It's still a favorite.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Yeah, the remake was kinda bad, but no one should enter high school without knowing it.

Super hero movies are always good-my brother and I both wore out the old Batman VHS tapes when we were kids.

    Escape to Witch Mountain
    Hocus Pocus
    West Side Story
    Blazing Saddles
    Indiana Jones

I'll begrudgingly say Star Wars, because I never watched it as a kid. I wish I had, and I don't think it would be the same seeing it as an adult. Oh well.

If you're going for real old school, how about the Buster Keaton movie Sherlock, Jr.? It's just 45 minutes, so maybe it could be double-billed with something... The physical comedy is wonderful and super accessible.

At that age, I also loved The Secret of Roan Inish.

Many fine suggestions already listed here!

    - My Bodyguard
    - Over the Edge

I was going to include Times Square, but that's an R-rated movie and their minds might be blown by some of the language.

If you want fun films for them, show them Bugsy Malone (if only so that they can see that Scott Baio doesn't ruin everything).

Ignore the '80s for as long as possible.

Second the "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" nom. Also, "Superstar". Yes, the SNL movie. Yes seriously. It might not be as old as you want but it's actually, surprisingly, funny and it has a great message for young kids (especially girls) about being yourself even when it's difficult and following your dreams.

Oh, to add another vote for a movie already suggested: The Princess Bride! Such a funny movie, reminded me of Monty Python, (which too many 10-12 year olds are unfamiliar with) and with scenes that are dramatic and funny at the same time (Remember the R.O.U.S.s, rodents of unusual size?) When I was in college, I loved The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai ("Laugh-a while you can, monkey boy!) but it probably wouldn't be appropriate for that age group...

wow, you have some great suggestions. i would almost suggest a monthly showing or an all day extravaganza.
i also think having a discussion after the movie would be a great experience for the youngins.

journey of natty gann is a great movie (beware of father/daughter issues ~ i recently re-watched this and was sobbing for a good 1/2 hour because of my childhood issues)

stand by me, great coming of age movie, good for both boys and girls.

farris bueller's day off, fabulous, look at it through the lens of farris not really existing but only as the imaginary friend of the other kid (cant remember his name at the moment)

war games, i remember watching in the library of my school 4th grade year during the last week of school.

back to the future. always a winner in my book.

beetlejuice, never really liked this one as a kid. as an adult could see it from a different perspective and loved it!

flight of the navigator. lovely simple movie.

Fifth element. great movie... "big batta boom"

E.T.. beautiful movie both times i saw it in the theater as a kid.

spacecamp, loved as a kid, but that might be cause i had a crush on one of the main actors :)

ghostbusters, loved it as a kid and enjoyed it as an adult.

real genius, as was mentioned, the innuendo could be too much, or not. it is a great movie. re=watched as an adult and it still works.

gremlins, was always a fav when i was that age.

good luck and i hope your kids/kids friends enjoy!

Midnight Madness (1980) is about a mystery man named Leon who invites college students to participate in "The Great Allnighter" scavenger hunt. Each of the five teams are designated by colors (white: nerds, green: jocks, red: sorority sisters, yellow: good guys, and blue: cheaters) and are given clues to solve, leading them to the next clue hidden in the city. Michael J. Fox plays Scott in his movie debut.

Here are my suggestions that I haven't seen elsewhere
    on this post

    -Airplane!
    -Masters of the Universe
-Sneakers (this is a plus in that it's highly watchable for all ages).
-5,000 Fingers of Dr. T (trippy Dr. Seuss written live-action film from the early 60's).
    -Fly Away Home
    - Robin Hood: Men in Tights

    My endorsement for other suggestions

    -Back to the Future(s)
    - Indiana Jones
    - Pee Wee's Great Adventure
    - Dark Crystal
    - The Labyrinth (caveat: everyone I know is able to trace their sexual awakening to David Bowie's impressive bulge in the movie)
    - Princess Bride
    - Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    - Raising Arizona.

    Disagree

    - 2001 and 2010 are WAAAYYY to slow for 10-12 year olds. I watched both in a middle school class
and ALL us kids were bored to tears.

    - The Wizard, really? Will kids today root for protagonists who play a climactic game of Mario 3 ????

    - Fifth Element the only reason to force kids to watch this movie is that you want to introduce them to a Euro-trash sensibility before they reach Bar/Bat Mitzvah age. Wait four or five more years and show them Bladerunner instead.

-400 Blows/Red Balloon are movies that are inflicted on children and (in the case of the former) tweens in the hope of broadening their horizons with foreign films that are in some way universal. They're not, they bore more than they entertain and they have the added nasty affect of inoculating children against seeing foreign films when they get older. If you want to show your kids some foreign films from an early age start with Jacques Tati or any of the excellent Anime suggestions in the thread. Also while not foreign, "Nanook of the North" is an excellent, classic film for all ages that depicts a foreign culture. Plus you can debate the merits of ethnographic objectivity and Western paternalism in the self same film once your well-read-in-film tweens inevitably go off to liberal arts schools.
