Where did the concept of awarding "a mushroom" to good answers come from?

My wife insists that there's an expression "to be under the mushroom" means to be stupid or fooled. ( I've heard of not living under a mushroom or not being found under a mushroom.... but really!)
Was there any thought put into these images: Mushroom, and gnome. Is there a special significance?

To be 'a mushroom' means to be kept in the dark and fed a line of shit.

    See also some options here:

    not sure if this helps.

I always thought it was a Mario Bros type reference...

I'm thinking it was a very late night. Jaegermeister may have been involved.

After the site re-design the mushrooms are no longer in context. But also I'm not up on my gnome trivia, do gnomes <3 mushrooms?

When I first saw the new site I wondered if they had any plans to change the mushroom icon. Maybe Space Needles, or Lattes, Sun Breaks.
