The Broadway Grill. Buttery and delicious and fried to the perfect crispness. Most unfortunately, everything else on their breakfast menu is just "meh."

Coastal Kitchen's spicy hash browns are worth dying for.

Wild Mountain Cafe never disappoints with its slightly modified take on classic hash browns. Instead of crispy (or sometimes overly oily or super dry) potato strips, you get two garlic mashed potato cakes that are just the right amount of crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Delicious every single time.

Best breakfast in Seattle, hands down, is Shanty Cafe. The bacon, the hashbrowns, and the very best: french toast. So good it's bad.

Ugh. Cyndie's is lame, no better than IHOP. I lived in walking distance to it, tried it out three different times since some people just raved about it, always left wondering what the heck they were talking about.

Both Ways Cafe. They have the tiny little potatoes that are mixed up with caramelized onion and pepper. As much as I am partial to the grated variety this place rocks. (If you want the grated variety go to CJs. No character, atmosphere or decent coffee, but otherwise superb.)

This question is problematic right up front because of the age-old hashbrown battle: grated, homefries, or patties? Patties seem to be pretty much a fast food thing (McDonald's are good) but the other kinds are distributed at random among breakfasty restaurants, and while I like both, I have found some people whose preferences are almost militant.

While I've been typing I've been trying to remember the name of the place where I had really addictively good (grated) hashbrowns, but I can't. So I will mention the Chelan Cafe in West Seattle as a place where they are at least pretty darn good.

Coastal Kitchen. Hands down, the best. Perfectly spiced and grilled and always right on the money.

Maybe it's just me, but I think it's a mistake to focus too closely on the food. Breakfast is an EXPERIENCE that must be taken in its entirety.

Current top three: Pancake Chef in Sea-Tac (or is it Tukwila?), Cyndy's House of Pancakes on Aurora, Family Pancake House in Edmonds, and Rooster's Breakfast Club in the old Val's space on Phinney (best Eggs Benedict in town). Wait, that's four. So, four then.
