What's a favorite band (of yours) no one in Seattle has heard of?--Well, save for you (obvi) and, let's say, one-hand full of other persons (tops).

My friend Garrett has this little home recording project that i don't even think has a name. It's all really Motown-inspired soul/pop songs. He plays and records it all himself. I've had one of the songs stuck in my head for about 6 months. It's so great and joyous and fun. I think everyone i know who has heard it loves it as well.

I've been trying to talk him into playing a show for ages now. Hopefully he'll get a band together and you'll be seeing him at the Croc before the fall is over.

Here are some of my faves:
Wayfinders -Jan Norberg is the flower-child David Bowie of Seattle and a musical genius!
((Low Hums)) Members of Sera Cahoone doing heavy Neil Young/psych jams
The Curious Mystery-Nick in the band built his own sitar! (also Shana Cleveland's solo stuff is lovely!)
    The Diminished Men-Ennio Morriconeeeeeeeeeee
Tiny Light-droney soundtrack music for wooden shjips fans
This Blinding Light -influenced by Loop/Spacemen 3
    heavy and loud
Angelo Spencer et Les Hauts Sommes -(OLY) happy upbeat and french singing ala Dodos
King Dude -TJ from Book of Black Earth's solo project -satanic folk music
    The Correspondents -quirky and vaudevillian
Final spins-psych pop -love Joe Syverson's vocals
    The Tempers -art punk
    Pearly Gate Music-so pretty !!
    ..........
There 's a start. Seattle has an amazing music scene right now!

Ruby Von Monster. It's one guy; he never plays out, but is absurdly prolific and stylistically diverse. His music is seriously strange and often disturbing. He was on MySpace [http://www.myspace.com/rubyvonmonstersound], but that site appears to have vanished. Damn. I've contacted him to see what's up.

Another band who haunt Seattle's underground peripheries are Yokai No Uta, who are pals with Are you a cat? Hear some of their music here: http://www.myspace.com/yokaisound

And, despite my best efforts, Are you a cat? themselves still remain relatively obscure. Dig into their art here: http://www.myspace.com/columbiacitybreakers

The newish band called Grenades is really promising. They've only played something like 3-4 shows. Three dudes from Kane Hodder with Brian Turner from Schoolyard Heroes. Brian is a great drummer. Heavy stuff--you might like it even if you weren't into Schoolyard or Hodder.

You can download a free three-song sampler here: http://grenades.bandcamp.com/

I also like Whitney Ballen--she plays at the Old Fire House in Redmond pretty regularly, but hardly ever here in Seattle. And Thousands is good dreamy acoustic stuff.

    The Color Bars!

They were based in Seattle for a few years but in viewing their Myspace page, I see they have recently moved to Brooklyn. Figures. They make really rad weirdo-pop (think Beach Boys meets Of Montreal produced by late-90's Beck, maybe?) ... I have never met anybody who has ever heard of them before, yet my top fave album for 2007 was their "Kairos at Infinity" ...And there were a lot of really good albums that year!

    http://myspace.com/thecolorbars

It doesn't help that they haven't updated their web page in a couple years, all of the e-mail addresses on the site come back undeliverable, they were supposed to release their new album last summer and as far as I can tell they never did, and up until very recently they hadn't signed into Myspace for over a year... yet I see even now they have a couple shows coming up so clearly they are still together. I guess that explains why nobody has ever heard of them, but still, totally excellent band for serious.

Magic MTN - new band that is basically Grant Olsen from Arthur & Yu backed by the Moondoggies. I am obviously biased, but it is really terrific. I love it so much it hurts.

They are opening for the Moondoggies May 20th at Neumos.

I saw a band called Pony Time at the Wild Rose on Saturday and thought they were pretty great.
