Yeah 9 times out of 10 openers have to be approved by the touring act. I do tend to throw what weight I have behind the bands that I like or think will fit the show the best.

It never hurts to just email the booker at the club and ask about opening. You might not get to open for the band you ask about but I do know that emails like that help put a band in context.

Pro Tip: When you do email inquiring about an opening slot please be mindful of what the band you are asking to open for sounds like. I've had bands ask to open for hard rock bands and then turn around the next week and want to open for Brandi Carlile. Moves like that make me think that you don't have your head on straight about your band.

Normally touring bands that are established will have connects in the community for locals they want they want to play with and will request to play with these artists.
Or they may request some suggests from the booking agent and then I will go ahead and send links to the band or their booking agent. It never hurts to ask a club's booker if you can play with a touring band you like especially if you can add to the draw and can help with local promotion.

Usually all the support is decided by the booking agent at the club unless the band is carrying support with them on their tour. There are exceptions. It never hurts to try the following- If a band is coming you totally love or you think you are a good fit to play with email the clubs agent and tell him or her that you would be interested in playing. It never hurts to ask. Second thing; keep track of your favorite bands and their tour schedules. You can usually see they are coming to town long before it ends up in the ad for the club. The early bird gets the worm. Email the band and ask them if you can open. I seem to recall Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head ended up doing a bunch of dates with CSS just because they built a friendship online. Lastly, if none of that works out, go to the show and try to meet the band and pass on your cd or links to your site. Just cause it did not work out this time does not mean it might not the next.
