What happens to dead people's facebook pages? Should I include my passcode in my Will so my status can be changed to "MyName is dead"?

A boy at my college committed suicide this past winter, and his profile showed up in my newsfeed recently, so I checked it out. Someone had gone in and posted video of the memorial service, but mostly people were just posting to his wall all sorts of goodbyes, or "Hey, this thing reminded me of you"s. It was eerie and bittersweet.

If you want to keep your friend's/loved one's Fb page alive for a sort of perpetual online memorial, DON'T contact Facebook and tell them that so and so died--they tend to delete their profile/acct *immediately*. Or at least they used to--it's happened to a couple of acquiantances.

There is no protocol for removing dead people's profiles. I have a friend who died recently and his profile is still up, and I kind of hope it stays. It's good to be able to see the things he used to post, his photos etc.
In theory, Facebook could in the future become one huge cyber-cemetery with dead people vastly outnumbering living people.

I've often wondered this myself about all of my online stuff, not just facebook. Am I supposed to write down all of my internet activity places and passwords and if I die have someone close all of my accounts? I guess it really wouldn't matter, because I'd be dead, but...I still wonder...

Their accounts are left there indefinitely. It is possible at some point in the future they will start deleting accounts that haven't been logged into for a certain amount of time. If you want such things handle post death, then make arrangements. I've had friends email me their passwords to inform people of their death before attempting suicide. Sites have been tracking dead myspace users for some time now (http://www.mydeathspace.com/ ), but those are usually the more high profile deaths such as murders and suicides. There is something disturbing about viewing a dead persons profile.

Naw... they just keep rerfering friends to each other and you're counted over and over again in promotional ads.
PS: Most people on Facebook are already dead...they just don't know it yet...
