What's up with the big scientology site in Lower Queen Anne? New signs along the top of the building spell out SCIENTOLOGY and they have put out flag

Is the Scientology population in Seattle growing? Anyone know?

The Church of Scientology has had a presence in Queen Anne for years. In fact, this year they actually won a community service award from the Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce. They even have someone on the QACoC board .

Apparently, their interest in Queen Anne is related to L. Ron Hubbard's childhood history. Here is an article that goes through their real estate acquisitions in Seattle (including a downtown branch), as well as talking about the protests organized against them by 4Chan's Anonymous.

kitch is right on the local connection: Hubbard went to high school on QA.

Yes, scientology is growing. Market share? I dunno bout that... but overall numbers of followers, YES. They'll never catch up to the Mormons though, if it were a race.

CoS have an impressive sales/marketing dept, no doubt. Plus, there's the whole 'my favorite celebrity is doing it, so I will too' aspect. And they've got money to burn, no less:

The aliens/xenu aspects, the charging money for salvation, substituting the Thetans space opera story for what others just term 'we're all made of stars', and their scary OCD-level defensiveness / privacy-fetish -these all kinda sour me on their cult, though.
