Recycle Chutes

Many apartment and condo buildings have trash chutes but I've never seen one with a chute for recycling... Should that be a building code requirement to help encourage recycling?

I'm not convinced that making that a requirement is necessary. Building developers, owners and managers may be able to come up with other ways to make recycling convenient for residents, and I think it's good if they have some flexibility there.

Tom and Tom cover it well. Perhaps in the future when recyclables have become highly important resources this might be a way to capture more of them.

To my knowledge, Seattle does not have any code requirements for recycling chutes and there has been no talk to include that. However, we do have code requirements for recycling in new construction or renovated buildings dating back to April of 1990. Any newly constructed building must include space for comprehensive solid waste management and that is interpreted to include recycling. Any building that has been significantly renovated would also be subject to this requirement though the code definition of "renovated" and/or the Department of Planning and Development's interpretation would exempt certain buildings.
