Is Seattle's mandatory Recycling a sham?

I recently moved out of an apartment complex that refused to put out recycling bins. Why is it that apartment complex managers get around Seattle's mandatory recycling law without real consequences?

If you are wondering, and want to check for yourself. The garbage dumpsters outside of Bayridge Court @ 620 8th Ave are going to have way more than 10% recyclables. And you won't see any recycling bins.

So, is Seattle's mandatory recycling just lip service?

Mandatory recycling in Seattle is real. Thousands of folks each year get their garbage left behind because there is more than 10% recycling in their garbage can.

Apartments can face $50 fees for continuing to have too much garbage in the recycling. Some apartments get a waiver because there is just not enough room in the building for recycling containers. Others just pay the extra penalty fee.

Seattle offers a lot of free education to help apartment owners and tenants properly recycle. Check out http://www.seattle.gov/util/Services/Recycling/ForApartmentOwners/index.htm for information. Despite laws, it still takes all of us- tenants, owners and the city, to do our part to make recycling work.

Brett covers it. You can also call 206-684-7665 to issue a complaint. They can check the database to see if your property has an exemption. Otherwise, you can request to speak with an inspector.
