Would the city kick down an extra, smaller bin just for food waste?

For years we have had a giant green yard waste bin, and we use it a lot for big yard stuff: grass, leaves, blackberry canes, small branches, stuff like that. Now that we are adding food waste it's getting pretty smelly, and a lot of ugly sludge is stuck to the bottom where it's impossible to clean out. I know the city suggests wrapping the food waste in newspapers or putting it in milk cartons, but we get milk in gallon jugs (kids!) and don't get a newspaper.

I noticed my neighbor has a cute little food waste bin, looks like about five gallons. I wondered if our household could get one of those smaller ones just for the food, that way we could clean it frequently, and still keep the big bin for when we have blackberry canes or other big, dry, clean yard waste. I would even pay extra for it, as long as the price was reasonable.

Yes, Seattle can do that, you'd be paying for both containers. It's 13-gallons and it is cute. Here's more information on changing sizes, and fees:

FYI- Don't put milk cartons into the food and yard carts. They don't break down into compost.

You might also consider using Cedar Grove-approved compostable bags. You can find a list of approved brands and where you can buy them at the link below:

These are not required to compost food waste; they are only a convenience for some households.

I've also got the gigantic bin and just scrape the bottom with a shovel every month or so. It's disgusting, but the sludge tends to stay in one piece, and plops right out on the next pick-up.
