Where should I take a guy friend that I have asked out on a date?

I've never asked a friend out before!

We hang out fairly regularly, he drops by my work to chat sometimes, and I've known him since we were teenagers. Despite (or because of) that, I think our friendship will be fine if dating doesn't work out. But I wanted the first date to be slightly more formal, not be hanging out at home watching a movie or something, like friends do. We're also both a little (or a lot) poor, so it can't be crazy spendy.

I already took him out to a SIFF movie after drinks when I was working up the courage to really ask him out. He's into movies, writing, motorcycles, building weird mad scientist shit, and is an awesome (and slightly geeky) conversationalist but awkward with the ladies. All I can think of is to drink and talk some more while lookin' reeeeeeal extra pretty.

Help a sister out?

This isn't a specific suggestion, so it may not be terribly useful to you, but I would try to go somewhere you have not been together before. I've been down this road with a friend (still together after 2+ years), and it's important to put yourselves in a new situation if you want something new to happen. It's hard to try relating in a (slightly) different way if you're somewhere you are used to hanging out as friends.

He sounds cool--hope this goes well.

Some ideas, in no particular order:
    - take him to a lecture/show at Town Hall. There's some really interesting stuff coming up and he sounds like a guy who might get into that. $5 for lectures; more for shows
    - take him to something weird at Theater Off Jackson or if the Admiral is showing something offbeat.
    - go canoeing and have a picnic, using the canoes at UW. This will work better if it stops raining.

I know that you ruled Georgetown out, but it might be worth a bus ride. You got my attention with "building weird mad scientist shit," and I'll bet he'd enjoy this .

This Friday will be an open studio build. If you contact Hazard Factory, they might let you watch. Maybe he will get some ideas to enter the race in Georgetown on the 26th! (Which is free, by the way.)

If you're looking for something a little more traditional and sedate, try to find a place that has live music, no cover, and a happy hour. For instance, the Dexter and Hayes has live jazz every week, and booths that are great for necking. Thaiku has jazz Wednesdays and Thursdays. The Triple Door has Afrocentric every Thursday... You get the picture.

Having a woman look reeeeeal extra purty while taking me out for dinks sounds pretty awesome right from the get-go.

Does he have a motorcycle? Can you guys two up for the night and cruise around looking for mischief to get into? Hugging yourself reeeeeal close to him on the back of the bike while looking reeeeal purty CAN NOT MISS if he is at all into you as more than a friend.

There is a drive inn theater in Auburn, IIRC. If it's open, take the bike and a picnic. this weekend should be beautiful. Wine, chease, bread, grapes, olives, salumi, etc. All very doable on the cheap.

Take him down to the Geoargetown Liqour company for drinks and a cheap meal. Spend some time playing the classic games they have available there and just chatting.

The Central Library is FREE, a nice place to walk around, and has some great author readings/lectures/films/music. Here is the list of upcoming events for adults:

And here is a list of child-friendly events, including lots of music (some are ONLY for kids and parents, but you can tell from the age range listed).

And if it is a nice out, then you could walk to the International District for a meal.

I say for some drinks and cheap food, Bleu Bistro on Cap Hill. 11pm-1am is happy hour. $3 wells and $5 grilled cheese. Also its a very intimate place and then see where the night takes you. Maybe a walk in Cal Anderson...
