Why are my teeth always falling out in my dreams?

On a regular basis I have dreams about my teeth falling out or being really, really loose. Sometimes it's all of my teeth, sometimes it's just a few of them. Sometimes they come out one by one, sometimes all at once. Sometimes they're just slowly crumbling out of my mouth no matter what I do. Does that mean anything in particular? Or do I just have a weird, tooth-obsessed subconscious?

I have the exact same recurring dream... It's always accompanied by a very panicked reaction in the dream. My teeth falling out is the worst thing that could happen in the dream.

I've heard it symbolizing stress about money, but that doesn't seem to really be the case with me. I kind of like the idea that it's an atavistic fear - 10,000 years ago, losing your teeth would be a pretty terrible thing to happen, survival-wise...

    Hi Megan,

Many people will have this dream at some point in their life. In fact, certain dreams are universal in that they have been found in almost all cultures across the world, and this is one of them! My speculation is that as adults, we have all experienced losing our baby teeth and there is some memory of the feeling that goes with that attached to the image in our subconscious mind. The emotions that go along with the experience can be indicative of the meaning of the dream.

One way of looking at this dream is that it can be symbolic of a loss of power, or that you have in some way compromised your own beliefs or values for the sake of someone else’s. Another view is that it is a fear of ‘looking bad’, for example, not necessarily physically (which you might fear if you did loose your teeth) but as in “I shouldn’t have said that, I’m afraid it will make me look bad.” The degree of severity in which you loose your teeth in the dream can be indicative of the how strong the issue is for you at the time.

Since this is a recurring dream, pay attention to what happened the day before you had it, and you will start to notice a theme. Recurring dreams come up whenever a recurring issue comes up. So when you have this dream, notice: have you compromised your power? Or are you afraid of ‘looking bad’? Ask yourself what it feels like to loose your teeth in the dream, then ask yourself if you felt that way at anytime the day you had the dream. I hope this helps!

That's a fairly common dream, and I occasionally have the same one. For me, it usually happens when I'm extra stressed. I think it's a reflection of self-doubt or feeling powerless, but there are other theories too .

The Chinese say this dream occurs when you tell lies. Tsk, tsk!

Here's how I understand dreams about losing/rotting/breaking teeth:

Teeth are our means of processing external things (food) into internal necessities (energy). In dreams the processing can mean problem solving, both unexpected problems and the daily grind (pun intended), or your ability to generally deal with things. Losing your teeth might indicate insecurities in your ability to do so, or that things are piling up.

I have them too. Usually they're loose and I'm trying not to touch them and make them fall out. When that happens I tell myself to get reorganized and take things on one at a time.

Keep a dream journal. You'll want to be able to look back on these.

It happens to me when I'm grinding my teeth / clenching my jaw (which can also be stress related, I realize, but can also be an anatomical issue).

I regularly had this dream for a couple of years. There was never any pain or blood involved in the losing of the teeth, but there was always a sort of "Oh shit! My teeth are falling out and there's nothing I can do to fix this." panic-y type of feeling, and there was almost always no one else around me in the dream when it happened.

Around that time, I often felt like I was on the verge of disaster, regarding money, school, and, coincidentally, dental health. Once I no longer felt on the verge of disaster, those dreams stopped.

Fear of growing old, fear of failure, fear of change, fear of abandonment, fear of financial insecurity.

I have these dreams too (occassionally)!

Don't you like, eat terribly? I bet you saw a documentary about 500-lb people with rotted nubs for teeth and your inner self was like "Nooo I see a parallel to this! Don't lose your teeth!"
