Activism at Pride?

How much of Pride covers political issues and pressing for those (with actual, 'here is who you contact and these are the talking points') - or is Pride pretty much just a straighter version of Mardi Gras?

There are two events. The parade is just a very big and fabulous parade. The festival part (at Seattle center) has booths with the sort of information you are talking about as well as speeches that cover a range of issues.

They are great events but lack the organization, art direction and intensity of Mardi Gras.

You'll definitely see the issues groups marching at Pride - the PFLAG folks and the inclusive churches always get a big cheer - but most of the activism takes place at the booths. The parade is a time to have fun, party, and be visible.

If you definitely want the "here is who to contact and what to say" most of the issues groups will have handouts available. Everything from health organizations to politicians will have booths.

Parade-wise: there's traditionally been a lovely mix: drag queen on the back of a caddie doing the parade wave, sex toy store handing out free condoms to halt HIV, queerfriendly churches making themselves known, sexy firefighters being hawesome role models, shrewd politicians making it clear that queer votes count like any other, the GLBA phonebook folks, etc...

thumbs up for funny phrase "straighter version of mardi gras" ;)
