Why do dogs bark?

My golden-doodle is incredibly sweet and wouldn't hurt a fly but when she sees someone outside, whether she knows them or not, she barks like she wants to rip their head off. If she could speak english, what would she be saying?

    "Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!"

...and much of the time, it means just as much as a person standing on the streetcorner yelling that. And it's for the same reason. "I need attention!"

Dogs think you're their pack. They figure you're kind of leotarded about sounding the alarm to tell the pack there's an intruder nearby (or a dandelion blowing in the breeze), so they take the responsibility of doing that for you. I think most dogs think we're sweet, but mentally defective, since we can't seem to decipher any of the scent-signals that are so important to them.

What your girl is probably saying is, "Hey! I see you! This is my pack! They're not undefended, you know, so you better not try to sneak up on us and steal all the kibble! I'll tell my person and he'll kick your ass!"

Thank Dog they don't speak English. I think dogs would just tell us how silly and boring we are. But it would help keep humans from making dumb mistakes, like patting dogs on the top of the head, as if they liked it.

Your dog is probably simultaneously shouting "Intruder!" to the folks in the house and "Go Away!" to the people approaching. You'll probably hear a change in pitch once she recognizes the people, getting higher when she realizes it's a friend, not a foe, out the window.

The bigger question is, why are you training your dog to bark like that? Ditch the perch - close blinds (Roman shades that open from the bottom are great), move the furniture, whatever it takes to keep her from feeling like she has to guard the house all day. She'll relax more and probably live longer. Stress kills.

If she's still young, under 2 or 3, be careful. This can be the start of a bigger problem, like biting people at the door. You might think about getting a trainer or behaviorist in to help - not one that will use pain or intimidation to correct the barking, but one who teaches her what *to* do, using reinforcement.

It could also be just what it already is, annoying. Many, many dogs bark at things they see outside.

"go away" and "attention family, a stranger approaches" or "come here now and play with me"

Dogs developed the bark to communicate with us. Notifying the family when a stranger approaches is one of the first skills dogs learned in prehistoric times. Chasing away predators is a likely second. In my experience, poodles are the king of barkers and love nothing more that watching for something or someone to bark at.

Dogs are essentially mentally and emotionally retarded wolves. That's what domestication is. You take a perfectly normal species and fuck with it until it's dependent on you like a baby is. And then you eat it. Or get it to help you get things to eat.

Wolves don't bark but wolf puppies do. And wolf puppies bark to get attention. When a dog barks it is saying "Hey! hey! hey you! Yeah you! I see you! Do you see me? I know you hear me! hey! I'm here! I will (play/kill/freak/love/etc-pick one) you if you come over!"

No dog is more dangerous than the the one that doesn't bark (excepting basenjis). It's reverting back to wolfy maturity and that is not good in a dog.

barks = frustrated attempts at communicating, because they haven't got proper lips ;)
