    top of my head suggestions:

THX 1138 - awesome sci fi
Forgetting Sarah Marshall - awesome comedy (imho)
El Mariachi - awesome subtitle/awesome western
    Chinatown - just awesome

Nine to Five is a really great comedy which was also one of the only (other) movies written & directed by Colin Higgins, who wrote Harold & Maude. It came out before the term "sexual harassment" did and it deals with it forcefully and hilariously so that should appeal to your feminist side. Also it's an early office comedy so there's your hat trick. I wouldn't call it slapstick, but it uses a lot of visual humor. See it if you haven't!
If you want to watch something more serious or maybe violent, I'd also strongly recommend The Baader-Meinhoff Complex, which is a true story, and Pedro Almodovar's Matador which is like a romantic horror movie. Those two are in German & Spanish, respectively.

google Manhola Dargis. She reviews/critiques/deconstructs movies for the New York Times and I think she'll be right up your alley.

Well it depends what you are into. Like for horror movies, when I need recommendations I go to thehorrormoviedatabase dot com and type in their search box whatever combination of keywords I'm in the mood for like supernatural, teens, ghost, haunted house and I get a list of movies about those keywords. They also have links for thriller, adventure and other movie databases.

It sounds like you might like the movie Ghost World. It's based off a graphic novel from the early 1990's about 2 young girls who just graduated from high school trying to figure shit and themselves out.

Imdb probably has a better description.

Harold and Maude is my favorite movie of all time. Your movie preferences sound a lot like mine: I am also very picky and detest slapstick. Try "Waking Life", "Run Lola Run", "Fight Club", "Sin City", "A Boy and His Dog", "Tank Girl" (campy, but very pro woman), "The Singing Detective", "Pi", "The Salton Sea", "Dirty, Filthy Love". Have fun!

    Mystery Train
    Down by Law
basically anything by Jim Jarmusch, in case you haven't tapped that resource yet...
Also: The Man Who Wasn't There from the Coen brothers is beautiful, and in black and white.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
    Before Night Falls
If you've got the patience, Werner Herzog's films starring Klaus Kinski are a worthy endeavor.
    Good luck!
