PS3: Buy a new one or get mine repaired?

About a year ago I bought a used 60GB PS3 on Ebay. I bought used primarily because they don't make the 60GB one anymore, and it's fully backwards-compatible (the newer ones aren't). Recently, the PS3 has been crashing after ~5-10 minutes of play. I suspect it may be overheating, as it crashes faster if I just restart it after the first crash, but I can't be sure.

My question is this: I've seen a number of places advertise PS3 repairs, but I've never had to repair a console before, so I don't know how effective a repair place could be. I'd like to keep a backwards-compatible version, but if my current PS3 is unsalvageable, then I might sprint for one of the new Slims.

So... what should I do? Is it worth bringing my PS3 into a repair shop or would that be a waste of time and money?

Recently my PS3 died as well and I was in the same situation as you. I could only find those one price repair sites your are talking about but I wanted to find someone local. The only person I could find has a shop in Everett. I got the number by calling up the nice people at Game Gurus in Lake City, (206) 588-1154. They have his phone number (sorry, I can't remember the guy's name).

I haven't had the chance to get out to Everett, so I have yet to get my console fixed. However, I did talk to the guy on the phone, and he said it was $20 or $25 to diagnose the problem and could tell you if it was worth repairing. I think it's a much better way than sending off your ps3 to who knows where.

I've never had a console repaired by a third-party, but if the price is right and you really want to keep that model, it's a fine option providing you do some research and be careful.

You should check around for reviews and info online about the specific company you're thinking of dealing with and if possible speak to at least one person who's actually used their service. Make sure you know exactly what you're getting and how much it'll cost. These kinds of companies can be scammers, and once they have your gear, they'll just start racking up charges and refuse to return it until you pay.

So.. do your homework and be careful and don't pay until it's fixed.

Trying to pinpoint the problem will be helpful before you decide what to do. What happens when it crashes? Does it freeze up, give you an error code, or just turn off? Does it happen with all games? What about movies? Does it sound like your PS3 is working harder, or are the fans making any strange noises? It could be any number of things. Getting as much info as possible will be helpful when you call (and Google) around to get quotes/info (if you decide to get it repaired); in the end it might be something as simple as needing a new hard drive, or something more complex. Before you take it in or get it replaced, the first thing you should do is back up everything on the hard drive. Get external storage of some kind you can plug in to move all of your game content, saves, and media over.

However, getting a new PS3 might be your best bet, so long as you're willing to sacrifice backwards compatibility for having a quieter/cooler/smaller system. Seeing as how you got this one on EBay and things are already failing, you might end up paying more in the long run trying to maintain it, and buying new will avoid all the hassle. And maybe you'll even be able to get a few bucks to go towards it by selling the one you have again on EBay to someone who is willing to put time in fixing it, offsetting your end costs.

You may want to check if it is still under warentee or any kind of warenty extension. I know that was the case with the Xbox's red ring of death. Landed me newer refurbished console after i spent 145 bucks for a used one off ebay.

    Just an idea.
