which new smartphone should i get?

I currently have the iPhone 3g, and my contract is up for renewal in about a month. I'm trying to decide whether to just upgrade to an iPhone 4, or to switch to the evo 4g. I split my time between here and Chicago, so the 4g network will cover me in both places, so that will be nice. The contract cost seems to be cheaper on Sprint, and Sprint has a better reputation right now about call dropping (at least in my understanding). I've done research on the web and played with both phones in the stores, but I want to make sure that there aren't things that won't be apparent until a month or two has passed.

For example, iPhone syncing is super easy because I predominantly use iTunes. But then again, I like the option of switching out microSD chips and connecting the HDMI output to a tv.

I guess what I'm asking is whether anyone switched from the iPhone to the evo? Or the other way around? If so, what are your takes on both of them? Or should I just wait my contract out a few more months and there will be an even better phone?

You might also want to look at the upcoming Epic 4G, which is Sprint's version of the Samsung Galaxy S. It matches the EVO in features, but it has a nicer screen and a keyboard. AT&T (as well as the other two major carriers) are coming out with a Galaxy S variation, but Sprint's is the only one that has a front-facing camera and a keyboard. I'm not sure of its release date, but I would say very soon, and it's something to check out in comparison to the EVO (though both are awesome).

As for syncing, look into doubleTwist: http://www.doubletwist.com/dt/Home/Index.dt Which is a syncing solution for Android.

The blessing and the curse of Android product development is that there's always something nifty over the horizon. You can't let that dictate your actions. Eventually you have to buy a phone, and switching to something else will be expensive.

I didn't buy an iPhone until the 3GS, which I still prefer to every Android phone I've touched. The iPhone 4 is a substantial improvement on the 3GS.

Android is packed with desirable features (turn by turn directions, Google Voice, sideloadable apps unless you're on AT&T), but the gestalt feels painfully unpolished to me. It's like buying a kit motorcycle.

I thought this essay did a fair job of capturing the divergent mindsets:

I'm with him. I think the great Android devices will be special-purpose, in the sense that the TiVo is a great Linux device.

Incidentally, AT&T announced at the iPhone 4 launch that contracts expiring in 2010 had early eligibility for a subsidized iPhone 4. You don't have to wait unless you're holding out for an Android over the horizon.

I've only messed with the iPhone a bit since I haven't owned one myself but I will say for me the EVO is really much better. the 4.3 inch screen makes for a pretty decent browsing experience and the 1GHz processor makes everything quick. Syncing it is easy. You can just mount it as a hard drive and manage things yourself (ex: for music just copy any folders from your iTunes collection into the folder marked "music" and you are in business) or you can grab DoubleTwist for a more polished approach (see Nick's answer). The microSD chip is nice so you can get up to 32GB of storage for now (comes with 8GB). Plus, Android 2.2 (froyo) will be coming to the device this year and that promises a bunch of improvements and even better speed, etc.
I agree with Nickm though, that if you aren't in a hurry then wait for the Epic as it is supposed to be very similar to the Evo but newer and thus better. Finally, the best thing for me about this device is Swype, the input method that makes tapping on a keyboard obsolete (granted this will probably show up on the iPhone eventually). I can compose emails or text messages 10 times faster now. Frickin' awesome.

Well, how do you like the 3G? Are there a lot of must-have apps on it? For me, going to Android would be painful. I love the OS, but the iPhone app store is astoundingly complete.

But if you aren't an app-a-vore, then get the best Android phone you can buy. The EVOs and HDs are all good, and there's always new stuff coming up.
