What do I do with old laptops?

I have 2 old laptops that I want to get rid of. Neither of them are functional and both are definitely outdated. [One just wouldn't turn on one day and the other got the "blue screen of death" virus] They both still have all kinds of stuff on them-music, photos, personal info, etc. I don't really need to get that information off them I just want to get rid of them in a safe and responsible way.

Donate it to Interconnection. They have various drop off points, or you can mail it in. They also would do a pickup if it was newer working machine. They wipe the hard drive, or destroy it if it doesn't work.

Got any good porn on them, or delicate personal information? Don't worry...we'll find it if you've left it on there... especially if you sell the laptop to an annonymous source...

I'm thinnking your best option is where they wipe the harddrive right in front of you, unless you really don't mind the rest of us getting our hands on your personal photos and posting them across the internet...

If you're up north, Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood will take donations of used laptops, computers, monitors, and peripheral devices for its computer repair and loaner program. Students in the college's PC hardware and support classes will fix up the computers (and get much needed hands-on experience in computer repair as they train for jobs) and then loan them to local nonprofits (and provide on going maintenance). Call ahead to make a donation: 425.640.1333.

You can drop them off at the University Book Store in the tech center and they will be donated to Interconnection (no cost to you).

If you have a machine that still runs, you might get some cash for it on Craig's List. Someone handy could wipe the drive and install a fresh operating system.

There is also a program in this state called E-Cycle Washington. Their somewhat clunky Web site allows you to look up types of e-waste, and find places that will take it.

All Goodwill locations now accept computers and TVs for recycling, completely free of charge.

Look up other locations at - http://www.ecyclewashington.org/

    Or call - 1-800-RECYCLE

Fawk safe and responsible. Raffle off tickets to people and the three top winners get to go all OFFICE SPACE on them. Include a baseball bat for an extra 20 bucks.

Divide your profits in two: half goes into your pocket/beer fund (i.e. for future headaches caused by new laptop) and half to a worthy charity (like: http://www.seattlegirlgeekdinners.com/ or the ruby room, or put up some $$ at vittana.org (see: http://www.seattle20.com/blog/Vittana-Tech-non-profit.aspx) or ......your own fav? ) so you don't have to feel so bad about the non-reusing of the laptop.
Besides, After the "battle vs laptop" you can always sweep up the parts and recycle them.

If you'd rather not go full-aggressive on your poor unsuspecting machines, you could always give laptops to techsoup, who works like an adoption agency for laptops, and finds needy/good homes for them at places like small libraries, non-profits and schools: http://www.techsoup.org/stock/productdonor.asp?cg=lnav
