What holistic treatments should I try to stop the swelling in my ankles?

I've had recurring foot problems for nearly two years. I recently had a gastroc recession (google it) done by my podiatrist, and a few weeks after I got out of my walking cast I noticed dramatic swelling in my ankle that caused decreased mobility and pain. I was told to get back in the boot for two weeks because my calf muscles weren't strong enough, but the swelling puzzled my doctor. I've had persistent minor swelling in my lower calves for a long time (at least a year), but this was swelling in the joint and around the heel, and occurred in both feet (not just the injured one).

I've had experience with acupuncture, but it didn't work very well. Icing didn't work at all. Elevating the foot works pretty well but I can't do that for eight hours at work. It also seems like the lower humidity on the other side of the mountains helps decrease swelling. Should I try something with my diet? Any other suggestions?

Double-check water intake (and make sure it's not too high),
then get T.E.D. socks and COCONUT WATER
(note: water made from immature coconuts, not milk)

Sometimes after a foot has been in a cast or boot for a while, I've seen joint restriction develop in the talo-tibial joint that can cause pain and impair normal drainage of the foot (causing swelling). In cases like this it can generally be treated with simple ankle manipulation. You might consider seeing an ND, DO, or DC that does ankle adjustments to have them evaluate you for this.

Have you tried compression stockings? If elevating helps drain the fluid from your legs, compression stockings might keep it from accumulating in the first place.

There are other factors to consider, including your general circulation health and nutrition. Two thoughts would be: Is there adequate protein in your diet? Is there excess salt?
