Glaucoma and herbal stimulants?

I've got injury related glaucoma and was advised by a Bastyr physician not to take horny goat weed due to its capacity to increase intraocular pressure. I had seen a spike after beginning to take it and discontinued it shortly thereafter, advice to do so came later. I'm wondering if ginseng has a similar effect?

Any stimulant can potentially aggravate glaucoma and should probably be avoided. What was the reason for this particular herbal prescription?

RandiBeever- I didn't see any studies directly addressing either the efficacy or risks of ginsengs and glaucoma. However, there are many species of ginseng, acting differently on the body. Some species will affect circulation and blood pressure, and would raise concerns for me in someone with glaucoma. Also, there are different types of glaucoma, with different causes, including glaucoma that may also show decreased blood flow to the eye or be worsening due to oxidative stress. A better understanding of your particular type of glaucoma and injury to the eye may provide some direction in treatment considerations with your naturopath.
