Thinking of moving to SF..advice?

I'm thinking about taking up a job offer in San Rafael, and I'm interested in living in SF. I've visited a few times before, but as far as living there, I don't know anything about the culture of different neighborhoods.

It might help to say that I am 21, female, gay, love my dogs, Fremont and Capitol Hill, farmer's markets, riding my bike, coffee, live music in cafes, reading, social activism. Thanks in advance for the help!

Agreed - that's a nasty commute. Go spend a week down there apartment hunting and do the drive each day for a taste of the pain.

Unless you have time and cash to burn, you might think about living in San Rafael or Sausalito instead of SF proper, especially considering your pocket bio/profile there. Plus San Raf has a decent lesbian population (even if half are still semi-closeted).

Otherwise, if you're hellbent on SF itself, the Mission District is, for now, still full of the young urban Gayz.

That's a helluva commute! San Rafael seems almost as far away from San Francisco during rush hour as the Napa Valley does on weekends. Are you aware of the distance? Have you tried doing the commute yet?

I agree with Capicola. Hope the offer involves enough financial compensation to cover the costs of living there and commuting. It's like I really love NYC? But I wouldn't accept a job there for anything under $90-100K a year because rent, food, and utilities eat up a huge chuck of change. A very small, very simple studio apartment on Manhattan can be $3000/mo. SF isn't Manhattan, but it's almost there, rent-wise. Also, I'm assuming that you don't care very much about the travel time. Me? It would drive me bananas. When I get off work, I want to get home as fast as I can.

Still, the allure of SF is great. The weather is, I think, nearly perfect - rarely hot, wonderful breezes, bright sun, sometimes moody. It's an incredibly beautiful place - even now with all the homelessness there (and there is, unhappily, a lot of it). I'm thinking you may have friends there, and that's good because SF can be a very chilly, cliquey town to newcomers.

One other thing...do any of your potential co-workers live in SF? Carpooling can help a lot with expenses and it may even help cut down on commute time if you can use diamond (HOV)
    lanes.

If you haven't seen it before, there's this:

    Best wishes, Airinem.

The living is easy, and the weather is awesome. That said, I hope that they are willing to pay you a shit-ton, and that you are OK with a 30-60 minute trip each way. How do you plan to commute?

Your options to get up to San Rafael from Noe, the Mission, Hayes Valley, or Duboce Triangle involve a) biking 20 miles each way; b) spending a ton of time in the car along with the $5 or $6 each day for the GG Bridge toll to say nothing of paying or searching for parking at night; or c) figuring some public transit combo that includes the Larkspur ferry.

As for dogs, SF is a great off-leash town but expect to pay a rental premium or put down an extra deposit to have dogs.

Congrats on the offer. I don't want to be too negative but be aware of the costs in terms of $ and time.

I'll save you the mistake I made: if you want to live in SF, live in the city. Don't live in the East Bay and expect you'll get there.

Live close to public transportation. Traffic sucks far worse than anything in the Seattle area.

You sound like a friend of mine who loves living in the Mission. Might be worth checking out.
