Best North American city other than NY/LA for TV/Film/Commercial work?

LA and NY are both highly expensive and competitive, though the latter, at least, is a pretty desirable place to live. What other cities would be a good choice for an actor, scriptwriter or director (may be a separate answer for each) to get work in the industry and eat/pay rent occasionally?

    - Santa Fe or Alb, NM,
    - Shreveport, Baton Rouge or New Orleans, LA
    -Detroit or Grand Rapids MI.

They all have HUGE tax incentives and more work than crew by a lot.

I'm in NY (Red Hook, Brooklyn) now; it's not too much more expensive, and you get what you pay for =)

According to the provincial government, "BC's thriving film industry is the third largest film production center in North America." Vancouver has neighborhoods in enough different styles to stand in for just about anyplace.

Toronto's also supposed to be pretty good; it stands in for New York City in a lot of productions.

Chicago. Also, a lot of work seems to go through Florida, mostly around the Miami area.
As far as competitive, you will get that anywhere. It is a competitive industry, you can't get around that.
As far as expensive, I don't know about LA, but for New York, it's fairly easy to commute from cheap(er) places like Queens or The Bronx (Brooklyn's not really cheap anymore), or even Long Island (if you've got a car)
    Good luck!
