ideas for a dog birthday party?

I've decided I need to throw at least one Doggie Birthday party in my lifetime for my pups and my friends pups. Any ideas on what to serve or how to make it fun for the adults too?

First off, the dogs are the guests, so make sure it's fun and safe for them. Not all dogs like parties, so even if their human is having a good time, make sure everybody takes their dogs' needs into account.

Don't tempt fate by leaving a big dog birthday cake on the ground for everybody to gorge on, unless all you have is tiny puppies or super-friendly dogs.

For the fun...I'm kind of a dog geek, so I think anything involving the dogs is already fun. But maybe some contests, like who can come to their human the fastest or who can fetch the most tennis balls in a certain amount of time. Or have people tell stories about how they got their dog, what they love most about their dog, their funniest story with this dog, the worst thing their dog has done, etc.

If you want an upbeat party, most of it should focus on the best parts of their dogs and their relationship with them.

If you have a big budget, you could hire a trainer to come in and have her guide the people through teaching a trick.

Do you have a lot of doggie visitors? If not, your dog may want to have the party somewhere else besides for his own territory - fenced in or on leashes. Or he could just meet each of them down the block, go for a quick walk, and walk into the house after their new friend.

    Have fun!

If the dogs like to swim, take them to a dog park (Mercer, Magnuson, or Useless Bay on Whidbey Island).

I think you'd have the most fun for everyone on Whidbey Island. The beach is pretty, the swimming is good, and you could have a picnic there. Neither Luther Burbank nor Magnuson are great for picnics in the dog-swimming area.

    Serve meatloaf.

Feed the dogs the same things you feed them every day. Or better yet, have fun activities like swimming or the dog park, but no food.

It's totally fine if your dogs are used to eating a lot of random stuff; then their stomachs can handle it. Historically dogs lived off human table scraps and garbage heaps.

But if they're like most pet dogs today, they probably eat the same dog food day after day. If all of a sudden you give them a lot of new, special food, even quality meat or treats, it could severely upset their digestive tract.

And by "upset" I mean you'll have some very bad news squirting out both ends for at least a day, maybe two. It's not pretty. The smell can be beyond your worst nightmare. If you have carpets -- oh, carpets! -- God help you.

I say this from bitter, bitter experience. If you must have food at the party, give them some of their regular kibble, but make a big show of it: smile, have them do a trick, act like it's the best food you've ever given them. They'll love it.

Dogs are simple creatures and they thrive more on human interaction than on any thing you could give them.

Beef for the dogs, booze for the humans. Dogs shouldn't eat cake but people can.

Also, a fenced yard is essential.
