How do I get a shaker cup like every bartender has but apparently no retail store ever has?

I want to shake my drinks like I see in bars. Every time, I watch as the bartender fills up a glass cup with the ingredients, forces a larger metal cup (like you see for extra milkshake from diners) down on top of it, and then uses that to shake.

However, no matter where I shop for this setup can I find anything other than frustrating three-part contraptions where the shaker has a lid and the lid has a filtered cap. All I want is a large metal cup; is that so much to ask?

The kind you are talking about is called a Boston shaker. I have seen them at Williams Sonoma and the kitchen store on 4th avenue across from Westlake plaza.

Also you can still shake your drinks with a cobbler shaker (the 3 part type) and then strain with a regular Hawthorne strainer, you don't need to strain with the lid. The Boston shaker does provide more space inside for shaking which may be desired for some drinks (and you can see your drink as you build it in the glass cup), but the cobbler shaker should be okay for most uses--it's pretty much the only type of shaker the Japanese use, for example.

You'd be surprised how many bartenders are just using the metal cup from a normal shaker and a common pint glass instead of the boston shaker. Works like a charm.

Yes, a Boston Shaker set up is what you need. I wish more retail places carried them instead of those 3 piece rigs!

Most restaurant supply stores sell them such as Bargreen Ellingson - take a peak under their Cocktail Shakers section under the Bar Supplies tab for the shaker tin – but you will need a standard 16 oz pint glass to go with it and a hawthorn strainer.

You can also check out any restaurant supply stores on line – give them a call, most with showrooms sell to the general public .

I do sell these also on my website in a basic bar kit. Check out http://www.kathycasey.com/shop_fun.html.  I had so many people asking the same thing about bar kits that I decided to assemble the basic essentials.

Cheers to shaking it up with a Boston shaker! – Kathy Casey

Go to Bargreen's, Dick's or any other restaurant supply store in Seattle and you'll likely be able to find a Boston shaker and pint glasses, as well as other professional-grade bar supplies. Consider stirring/straining rather than shaking, though, if you don't want to bruise your booze!
