Do you remember Restoration Hardware when it first opened? It was full of cool retro hardware and tools and toys. You could even get model boats. Well, now they sell towels. Lots of towels. Half the store is nothing but towels and towel related products. It must be a great money maker for them. They are very nice, turkish towels in a variety of muted colors. Not by any possible definition a "hardware" but still very nice.

What counts as a nice towel for you? Do you like the extra-soft plush kind or do you feel lint-coated when you use one? Does it need to be very large/a specific color/made of organic materials?

My husband is 6'6" and his favorite towel ever was an extra large bath sheet from Sears--Egyptian cotton, very plush, and the first towel he ever owned that went to his ankles when he used it. It was also a $70 towel.

My favorite towel was a Christmas gift from my mom--I think it cost her $7 at Walmart. It's white, large, and made of regular terry cloth, not the sheared kind of fabric.

I guess your best bet is to go to a mall and check out the options that fit your budget.

I personally love French Velvet. So soft and fluffy and reasonably durable for the price.

"Extra-nice" is terribly subjective. Bed, Bath and Beyond sells a bunch of different kinds of towels varying in pile/weight/size. I'd go and start hugging towels.

The best I know of: The St. Francis hotel in San Francisco. They don't exactly sell them, but there are ways they can be acquired.

Here in Seattle, The Sorrento has pretty damn good towels too.
