Will eating seaweed harm my dog?

We took our new Shih Tzu to the Edmonds off leash park last weekend and she went crazy for all the seaweed drying on the beach. I know she ate several mouth-fulls while we were there. We tried to distract her and were able to get it out of her mouth once or twice, but she plays keep away and can be hard to catch (we will be taking obedience classes next month). She seems fine now, but should we avoid the beach in the future? Is this even worth worrying about?

I'd be concerned about pollution. Per Fish and Wildlife, seawater in summer is a good source of bacteria that can be killed by cooking but will be present on anything raw. They recommend washing all seaweed before eating, and humans are bigger than a Shih Tzu so contaminants could hurt her more.

If she's really eating the seaweed, you may want to avoid the beach until she's graduated from obedience classes.

I eat seaweed all the time and it hasn't killed me yet. I carry a knife when I fish and frequently cut a slice to munch on. I've never gotten sick, and I've been doing it for two decades. I wouldn't worry about it.
