What plants can live under a Holly tree?

i've tried a few different plants, but all seem to succumb to the evil holly sap. any suggestions for plants that grow well under/close to holly?

My neighbor had a big pokey bush of Juniper near (in the bed, just in front of) her Holly tree, but (I'm not sure how 'under' you mean when you say 'under').
