  7 0 This is accomplished through the issuance of a "Notice to Airmen" Commonly referred to as a NOTAM. Relevant NOTAMS are broadcast by all air traffic control stations in an affected area, and will be repeated by controllers in conversation with pilots. Pilots are also made aware of all relevant NOTAMS in the flight plan filing process. If you really want to know more about NOTAMS, they're also tacked onto all weather reports. Before approaching an airport, pilots are required to tune to a specificed frequency to get the most up-to-date weather and safety information for that airfield. NOTAMS are also always included in this broadcast. This information is updated hourly, or as conditions change and is identified by both a Zulu time stamp (formerly known as Greenwich Mean Time) and a sequential aviation alphabet designator (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliet, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu). They cycle through the letters then begin again. Before a pilot even gets close to an airport they will tune to this information. A typical broadcast go something like this, and NOTAMS are always added at the end: "King County International Airport Information BRAVO Time 0930 Zulu weather. Wind 160 at 7 gust 15. Temperature 25, dewpoint 12. Landing and departing runway ONE THREE, Advise on initial contact you have information BRAVO. Notice to Airmen - Restricted airspace in the aerodrome vicinity from 0900 Zulu to 1430 zulu for presidential aircraft." Pilots make initial contact with the tower by acknowledging they have heard the weather and relevant NOTAMS by identifying the most up-to-date broadcast by Alphabetic identifier (in this example BRAVO). A pilot would say "Boeing Field Tower this is N9297X (or whatever the aircraft callsign is) requesting approach to runway ONE THREE information BRAVO." If the airport has updated the weather or the NOTAMS and issued a new report the controller would say "negative, N9297X, re-contact with information CHARLIE" thereby telling the pilot to listen to updated info. The information about restricted airspace is put out there so many times in so many different ways that it is absolutely inexcusable for a pilot to miss the info I went to pilot school.   0 2 You do have to file some kind of flight plans. You also have to get clearance for takeoff and landing. In addition, they will direct "Cestna 2N845, turn left to heading 245 degrees to avoid restricted airspace. Will redirect when you have cleared the area." And of course, if they DON'T cooperate and take direction, then you hear the ominous "Scramble the fighters and take Flight 93 down before they reach 'the package'..."
