Why are veggie burgers at restaurants almost always the worst kind?

I'm well aware that being a vegetarian is often going to limit my options at restaurants. However, why is it that so many restaurants go with the Gardenburger (tm)? It is probably the most bland and boring one on the market. If a restarant isn't going to make the effort to have a house made veggie burger, there are other tasty options besides the accursed Gardenburger.

Cory & Griffin are both right. Plus, they know you're likely to buy it because you go with your non-veggie friends and it's one of your only options.

I'm a meat lover, but the Burgerville's Yukon Potato & White Bean Basil Burger is hands-down the best non-meat burger I've ever had.

I wish the closest wasn't in Centralia.

Actually...The veggie burger at The Counter in Ballard is surprisingly good. The patty is made entirely in-house (so none of that frozen fake meat flavor) and a number of the condiment options are vegetarian/vegan.

    Give them a try.

Gardenburgers are HORRIBLE and Boca just admitted they use GMO soy... so... the following places make their own inhouse Veggie Burgers:

    1. 22 (formerly 22 Doors) - probably my favorite
    2. Georgetown Liquor Company - also my favorite
    3. The Counter - tastes different every time I get it
    4. Sunlight Cafe - nutburger, very yummy. only thing i like there.
    5. The Highline. I didn't like Squid and Ink's veggie burger so I don't know if this is the same or not.
    6. Wayward Cafe - haven't had it yet because everything is so freaking good on the menu I keep repeating stuff I have already had. lol.

Thank you for making veggie burgers in house and not resorting to black bean burgers or frozen burgers!

Just a theory, but meat eaters probably consider a vegetarian version to be an afterthought. May be a cross between snobbery and lack of passion.

I'm guessing that Gardenburger happens to be the brand of fake meat that the restaurant's supplier carries. It's a pain to coordinate multiple restaurant suppliers, so that's what you get.

You could ask at your favorite places if they could carry something you'd prefer (be it Boca or Quorn), or you could, I dunno, order another vegetarian option from these places.
