What is a good place to camp in a tent in the redwoods, preferably accessible easily from San Francisco?

I'm going to be in San Fran for the first week of Sept and want to take my girlfriend camping, as she's never seen the redwoods. I have been once, but it was a long time ago and I can't remember where I was. We can rent a car if we need to, but would prefer not to have to if possible. Where should we go?

There are a couple of choices. For tent camping, Big Basin Redwoods State Park is beautiful, in the Santa Cruz Mtns, 2 hours South from SF. You'll need to rent a car for this one.

For viewing redwoods, you can go to Muir Woods in Marin County (north of SF, across the Golden Gate Bridge) This is a day trip, no camping--but lodging can be had nearby. There are tour bus trips available from vendors in SF.

San Francisco and the true Redwood Nat'l Forest are not terribly close to one another (in fact, it's a long ass drive) but the Redwoods are worth the drive for sure.

Patrick's Point state park is right by the Redwood Nat'l Forest AND the ocean.

You can also try this site for tent or rv camping, as well as some useful area links and hiking info:

Near SF, Samuel P Taylor State Park is a decent camping place. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=469
