Which DC comics would you suggest.

I want to get back into reading comics again, 5 years ago I was reading all the countdown to Infinity Crisis, Infinity Crisis, some of the aftermath series and got 18 issues into 52. Aside from finishing 52 I'm not sure what other books to start reading. I'd like to start on something that has either a recent storyline starting or is a new series so I don't have to spend $50 buying back issues.

What do you suggest?

I'm not a huge fan of the main DC Universe titles, but if you're looking for a recent saga to collect, you'll inevitably run into the hokey Blackest Night/Brightest Day crossover. It might be worth reading it if you're really into Green Lantern or something, but I found the whole thing pretty tiresome.

The last couple of years have been interesting in the Batman titles. Grant Morrison's Batman RIP flowed well into the Battle for the Cowl, and now he is writing Batman and Robin with Dick Grayson as Batman. Yost's Red Robin has been entertaining, and the new Batgirl title has been getting attention with a gay main character. You can read all of those arcs without needing to buy issues before 2008.

But really, I could take or leave all of those titles. One DC title which I regard as a must-read is Secret Six. Gail Simone is a great writer; it's definitely worth checking out.

DC's Vertigo imprint has a lot of titles which are wonderful reads. If you haven't already, you should definitely read all of the Sandman spinoff Fables, which has its own spinoff with Cinderella: From Fabletown with Love. But since Fables has been around for a while, so you might want to buy it in TPB. iZombie and Sweettooth are two relatively new titles which are fun to read- you can get in on the ground level with those.

I agree with most of the people below: Avoid the main titles (Straczynski is sucking up the place with Wonder Woman and Superman, and James Robinson must've had a head injury between his old Starman series and his current Justice League.) I hated Blackest Night and I dislike Brightest Day.

As Kitschnsync says, Secret Six is always fun if you like continuity, and their Vertigo books are great if you don't have to have superheroes in your comics.

But I usually like Grant Morrison, and he's doing something really weird and different with Batman. That would be my pick for in-continuity stuff. His All-Star Superman was fucking incredible, too.

May I suggest that you watch for the Batman Confidential single shot that will appear this September or October by James Patrick.

This outstanding young writer "gets" Batman as the Darknight DETECTIVE as few others have shown him in the past. It promises to be a good insight into the deductive reasoning powers of the Batman.

Also, DC has just completed a run of five one shots, called Joker's Asylum II, which features him telling tales of OTHER Batman Rouge gallery villians. This run featured: Killer Croc, Riddler, Harley Quinn, Mad Hatter and Clayface, as I recall. The two best one shots are Harley Quinn and Killer Croc, by popular acclaim.

I hear the current arc and cross-over involving "Darkest Night" is really good, but I've not read any of it.... I'm more a Marvel fanboy...

PS: I've heard from a friend who just bought 200 back issues of Batman, etc, that Hush, Red Hood and search for Bruce Wayne are all good. But I can't tell you anymore than that...

Just, whatever you do, for the love of Holy Metaphors, avoid Batman: Odyssey. Neal Adams manages to somehow lay words onto the page despite the overwhelming weight and volume of his head. In fact, he 'lays' quite a few words. Forcibly. Too fawking many.
