How do you prevent/treat ingrown hairs?

Nothing serious, but shaving or waxing, I always seem to get a few and they drive me bonkers.

Anyone have any advice (other than the obvious "don't shave or wax") on how to prevent or treat them? What's worked for you?

Ingrown hairs occur because microscopic trauma around the opening of a hair follicle stimulates skin cells to grow and stick together, sealing over the follicle, as if they were sealing a minor cut. Prevent ingrown hairs by shaving not so closely, leaving the cut hair at or above the skin surface. Avoid tiny nicks to the skin around the follicle by using a sharp new razor blade with an effective guard and good lubrication, or safer yet, use an electric trimmer.

It's spendy, but I had laser hair removal done and it cleared up the ingrown hair problem forever! Love it!

    tendskin
i get it in liquid form, but i think they make a gel too. it's awesome for after shaving or waxing. not only does it help prevent ingrown hairs, but it makes the shaved skin incredibly smooth. it's very strong though, so make sure to use lotion after it dries if you have sensitive skin.
you can get it at most drugstores.

Have you ever tried using clippers or one of those little trimmers made for bikini lines? I've found less problems using those.

Jezebel just tackled ingrown hairs as part of their Beauty Disasters column this weekend:

Some topical tips mentioned: deoderant, witch hazel and salicylic acid.

I find that using a scrubby mitt to exfoliate helps too - use it every day, not just on days that you shave.
