Why do we have to have an American version of "Being Human"?

I love the BBC series "Being Human" and now apparently SyFy has decided to make an "Americanized" version. Why do we have to take something that is already entertaining in it's own right and make it "American"? Is the British version to gay friendly and doesn't appeal to middle America? Or is the British version too "brainy" for the deep south?

    American's don't understand plots that go beyond a 4th graders comprehension level. And Being Human is around a 6th graders comprehension level. Therefore even that show must be "dumbed" down for Americans.

    This is SyFy. The deep south and homophobes don't even watch that channel. The thing the Syfy channel is known for is cheap production values. It must have been better for the profit margin to make a cheap version of the show that they will own and can resell on DVD. Otherwise they pay for the broadcast rights of the British version and are limited on how else they can sell the product.

    I think Kip Waddie probably nailed but ... maybe it's the same reason they replaced "Father Christmas" with "Santa Claus" in the Harry Potter books, as if "Father Christmas" isn't much more self-explanatory.

    Lack of imagination, IMO.

    The only reason why there is no American version of Monty Python is that they couldn't find actors do do the "Ministry of Silly Walks" skit.

    This isn't really anything new. The U.S. has been mining BBC series for ideas for at least the last three decades. If you can find it, there's an awful American pilot of Red Dwarf with Craig Bierko in the Lister role and Terry Farrell as Cat.

    As to the "Gay Friendly" thing...Aside from the casting of Russell Tovey as one of the leads (a straight character, as well), I can't really see how the show would trip off the OMGEVILBUTTSECKS radar of the conservative right.
