  2 2 Because fat people are SO FAT AND STUPID! Well, some of them. Just like some skinny people are fat and stupid. It's just that some folks can't take a joke and others don't want to listen to what I have to say and so insist that I hate all fat people—or all straight people or all gay people or all black people or all HIV+ people or all leotarded people—so that they can ignore my legit, non-jokey points. But I don't hate fat people. I feel like I am a fat person. You have to admit that you have said some harsh things in the past about fat people without acknowledging your lack of understanding for a true fat experience. Of course, you may not actually hate on fat people in person (some of my best friends are *insert type here* etc.)...but as someone who is NOT fat and has never been fat, without educating yourself about the experience of it and without trying to see a non-mainstream view of it, it is possible for your hating the "fat" to come off like hating the fat PERSON. Not that you do, but it can read like that sometimes. Maybe it is partially due to some things getting lost between what you write and what people *interpret* you writing. I know that for me, living as a fat person in this world, I become very sensitive to attacks on fat and fat people, and sometimes don't see a distinction between attacks on the two, because there IS sooooo much hate in the world for fat people. It all kind of melds together sometimes. Also, when people talk about getting rid of "the fat" there is still the physical aspect that that fat is a PART of someone's body. Somehow it seems like an attack on the person, because so many people see the fat person as THE FAT and not as a person. I don't know how to explain it. One final thought is that it is AND it isn't as easy as just losing the weight. Telling someone to lose the lbs. dismisses the very complex nature of weight, fat, identity, hunger, fat hate, self hate and all that other crap that is seemingly wrapped up in every little fat molecule. Anyway, it goes a LONG ways when you preface rants about fat with explicitly saying that you DON'T hate fat people. It makes it clearer and easier to love you. Because really, some of us fat people just want to love you, because you are so darn adorable, smart, brave, and righteous. If I remember correctly, he has mentioned that he was an overweight child and has many family members who are overweight. That would explain why he feels like he's fat... Dan's written that he was overweight as a kid, is genetically predisposed to obesity, and that several of his family members are fat. He has said insensitive things about fat people, but he's said insensitive things about just about everybody. I'm not trying to defend his comments about fat people, just pointing out that he's not as ignorant as you seem to think. A lot of people who were once fat, even as kids, have a lot of internalized fat hate and/or body hate even as adults and even if they are thin now. Sometimes the biggest fat haters are once-fatties. I guess I mean that coming at the fat acceptance angle from the EXPERIENCE of actually being fat, rather than watching fat acceptance from the sidelines as a once-fat, now skinny person is kind of different. Once you leave the realm of BEING fat, you can sort of do whatever you want. You get access to the skinny club. But, you are right. He doesn't hold back when he says things, but that's why people love him. Maybe it is just frustrating, because fat people don't need yet another person hating on the fatties, and it has come across like that at times. Whatever.
