iPod synching issues!!!!

Almost every time I try to synch my iPod, it either: freezes in the 'do not disconnect' phase (before the computer recognizes it) or, the computer seems to take FOREVER TO recognize it, and I end up screwing around with the cable before anything will happen. Its driving me MAD!! Any suggestions? I tried to sync it about 3 hours ago, and it the iPod screen still reads "do not disconnect", and my computer has yet to do anything -

    A similar thing happened to me about a year ago. My computer wasn't recognizing my iPod when I plugged it in, or it would only recognize it as a "USB Mass Storage Device" and not as an iPod. After trying most of the things Protosaurus recommends, I finally had to wipe my iPod and reinstall everything. It totally worked and it's been just fine ever since. I don't remember exactly how I did it, but I got the instructions from Apple's troubleshooting website, so I'm sure you can find them if you're interested.

    Try everything Protosaurus listed.

    Then, if you do get it to appear and past the initial hurdle, click the "Restore". It will take some time to do a wipe then restore, and it will ask you if you want to restore the data. Worth doing every now and again.

    Basics:

    -Turn iPod off and on
    -Reboot computer
    -Try a different cable
    -Try a different USB port
    -Reinstall iTunes (can't in OSX, be careful not to nuke your music/video collection, don't do this if worried)
    -Apple Icon->Software Update, do ALL of them, and be patient
    or: Control Panel->Windows Update, do ALL of them (even the optional ones), and be patient

    Finally, if you had a slew of updates waiting, make sure you check for more updates to see if there's a second round. Keep checking until there are none available.

    If none of that helps it may be worthwhile to try the Genius Bar if it's easy to do. They are usually fairly competent.
