People assume that cartooning is easy cause you make it look so simple. Is it really? How hard to break into the field?

What steps or education would you recommend a person have if they wanted to be a cartoonist or a comic artist?

How does a teen's interest in art and drawing translate into a paying job cartooning? Or is this even practical to consider?

Should people look at cartooning as a hobby while keeping a day job?

I'm pretty sure that all professional cartoonist have a strong artistic background in realism. The reason cartoons looks so easy is because the artist knows how to draw good enough to simplify the world in a skilled manner. But without the strong background, cartoons will often look bad.

A good example are teens who draw anime and claim that since they are drawing toons, they don't need to study anatomy. But then when they draw, their art looks crazy, with proportions all over the place, elongated bodies, weird faces, funny perspective and shading, and poses that aren't humanly possible unless you've got no bones. Of course cartoons often have these aspects but it's because the artist is drawing in a stylized format on purpose, not because he lacks of knowledge or skill.

Check out ConceptArt.com, specifically the forums for help. It's a pretty professional set of forums and a great place to get critique. I would recommend starting a sketchbook in their sketchbook Forum and trying to get some feedback. Deviantart is also a place where artists converge though it's not as professional as ConceptArt. It can also be hard to any feedback on DA unless you are already very good.

As for actually getting a job, it just means you have to be realllllllllly good and devoted. There is serious competition out there for all the art jobs, especially in cartoons. An interest can become a job but it takes a lot of skill, networking and time. But if you really want to do it, then I would say start getting as much information as possible and go for it.

Is anything easy really? No, not really. Most everything requires dedication, but if you can make dedication fun & love the process, things tend to take care of themselves & you hardly notice that it's work.

I can barely draw at all, I was always awful in art class. I have some pretty good ideas every now and again, though. I think original ideas are the most important things, or the ability to lift other ideas in an original manner. With a light table and certain pens, I learned to trace and make my drawings look like Tom Tierney, who is my favorite artist. That's how I learned to make art. I went to college for English & dropped out, I never meant to have a career in art.

I believe that people can truly decide whether they want to do something for a living, or a hobby if that's what they prefer. It's just all part of training your brain to do what you want for it to do. It's wonderful to take the giant & scary step into doing what you love for a living. Everybody should try it with all of their heart at least once in their lives. But you have to do it that way, or it won't work.
