Seattle drivers - is this a thing here?

Today I got a thumbs-up clearly intended in lieu of a middle-finger. Was this a passive-aggressive-Seattleite thing? Or is this a trend I have yet to hear about?

If there is a way to be passively aggressive, Seattleites will find it.

I don't know that it is a trend, though... Even a sarcastic thumbs-up is pretty aggressive for a typical Seattleite.

I like that. Kind of a "Nice job, Buddy!" kind of fuck you.

I do it all the time for that exact reason. For me, it's less a passive aggressive thing and more of a personality thing. I'm a huge smart-ass, but I'm no bitch. I think of it more as a sarcastic flipped bird. But I'm from CA originally. And I haven't done it today, if you are wondering.

Maybe your driver was dyslexic or had hand-eye coordination issues.

Seriously, though, seems over-the-top even for the passive-aggressive types (though Kitschnsync may be right on point with the sarcasm). Or you just got an especially repressed and socially inept one who probably says things like "That's GREAT!" when informed a friend's puppy has died.

Maybe it was us-- my boyfriend does this on a regular basis...sometimes it's actually a thumbs up (as in, thanks for not being a douche) and sometimes its the "in lieu of a middle-finger" thing.
