Any advice for a newbie comic artist or graphic novelist?

Are there any particularly grating mistakes/cliches/pathetic displays of incompetence you wish you could shake out of the inexperienced?

Learn how to draw the human figure, and check out Scott Mcclouds book Understanding Comics.

Create your own niche. Explore and master what you enjoy doing, a good example is manga or anime.

Make it about the characters and the story. The art of it will flow from that. Don't let yourself get lost in the details of the particular style or art that you want to draw so much that you forget it is truly about telling a moving, compelling, and emotional story involving characters that we should all come to love, hate, or a balance of the two.
