What do I do with all these books?

I'm clearing out more than half my books - just keeping first editions, all-time favorites that I read over and over, and a few collections (Oz, old etiquette books, cookbooks).
I plan on bringing about five boxes to Twice Sold Tales on the hill to trade. Last time I took books there, they rejected about 1/3. What do I do with the books that TST rejects? Is there another used book store on/around Capitol Hill (I'm in the CD) that is less discriminating and would take all or most of the books?

    Half-Price Books would be a good place to start with your TST rejects.

    You also might want to shop your books around to several stores. You often get a better price if you bring in smaller quantities. I have found that if you sell a huge lot the buyers don't always give each book equal consideration and tend to lowball.

    You might want to consider making multiple trips spread over a week or two or just going to TST first then Half-Price Books. If you still have remainders maybe try Spin & Crown Books (on Pine St). If you still have books after that circuit your best bet is to just drop them in a book donation box or at the Goodwill.

    If you just want to get rid of the books and aren't too concerned with getting money, public libraries generally accept book donations. Stuff that's in good shape and they think there will be a demand for, they'll add to the library's collection. The rest they sell at book sales as a fundraiser.

    It's a public service in two ways - the library gets money, and people without a lot of extra pocket money can get books cheap at the sales.

    For a large donation, the library would probably appreciate you calling ahead before you drop off. They'll be able to set aside some space if they need to, and maybe have an extra person or two around to help (especially if you're mobility limited in any way), and they can also tell you what building/entrance you can use.

    Every Goodwill or Value Village will take your books if you're willing to donate them.
