I live in downtown Detroit. Should I move to Seattle, and why?

Well, on the downside, you can't buy houses here for a dollar. On the upside, you might be able to find a job. And we have people here, and most of them aren't trying to flee, either.

You will probably miss a certain amount of urban grittiness we mostly lack, and the lack of much of a powerful black cultural tradition (or a Jewish one, or an Italian one, or a Greek one, to name four) impoverishes us. We have no Motown in our background, and what little tang and savor we have enjoyed over the years has been mostly scrubbed away. Like Detroit, we were in large part built on a solid tradition of building stuff in factories (planes vs. cars) though the impact of that has dramatically lessened in the last thirty years, as has the other working-class ethic of the northwest (cutting down trees). Now, like every other damn place in the country, we're about office parks and Starbucks.

But if you look you can find other things. Seattle's not a beautiful city, but it's in a beautiful setting (mountains, Sound, lakes). We're not as groovy as we think we are, but we're not Peoria, either. People here for the most part are smart, liberal, and well-off. We dress shitty, though; you will come under pressure to trade that private-eye outfit you're wearing in your profile pic for some fleece pullovers and pleated khakis, and socks with Tevas. Resist, my friend! But don't even think about a gold suit.

1)If you think you can find a job, yes.
2)If you're either an arty person and/or a lover of the outdoors/camping/hiking, yes.
3)If the idea of 9 months of coolish and wettish weather doesn't bother you, yes.
4)If you know that Seattle is going to be more expensive to live in that Detroit and you can afford it, yes.

because seattle has the best summers in the world. (if you can live through the winter... its like 8 1/2 months long.)

    a) it never gets fatally freezing here. (it does get freezing here, but rarely for too long, and never below 0F.)

    b) it never gets fatally warm here. Ever. And it's rarely too humid, despite the many grey days.

    c) barely any mosquitos in the city

    d) there is a nightlife in downtown and adjacent neighborhoods (Capitol Hill being an obvious example.). Seattle certainly doesn't have a St. Marks Place analog, but the town doesn't all go home en masse when it gets dark either.

    e) Lots of places to get lots of different beers and wines.

There are plenty more reasons, but they're more specific reasons that may turn you on or off.

Hey, you ask a general question, i give you a quasi-general answer.

Quick, get out of Detroit NOW. That sucking sound that you hear is the end of the world as we know it. It starts about 8 mile and gets louder the farther inner city you go.

I should know. I lived there for 8 years and got out before the collapse of GM doomed the Fisher Theatre area.

Seriously, it would be a fresh start, but don't jump unless you have a job and something concrete lined up.
See the original comment above about the lack of black, jewish, greek and other cultures being obvious. They are calling it like it is, my friend!
