Well, on the downside, you can't buy houses here for a dollar. On the upside, you might be able to find a job. And we have people here, and most of them aren't trying to flee, either.
You will probably miss a certain amount of urban grittiness we mostly lack, and the lack of much of a powerful black cultural tradition (or a Jewish one, or an Italian one, or a Greek one, to name four) impoverishes us. We have no Motown in our background, and what little tang and savor we have enjoyed over the years has been mostly scrubbed away. Like Detroit, we were in large part built on a solid tradition of building stuff in factories (planes vs. cars) though the impact of that has dramatically lessened in the last thirty years, as has the other working-class ethic of the northwest (cutting down trees). Now, like every other damn place in the country, we're about office parks and Starbucks.
But if you look you can find other things. Seattle's not a beautiful city, but it's in a beautiful setting (mountains, Sound, lakes). We're not as groovy as we think we are, but we're not Peoria, either. People here for the most part are smart, liberal, and well-off. We dress shitty, though; you will come under pressure to trade that private-eye outfit you're wearing in your profile pic for some fleece pullovers and pleated khakis, and socks with Tevas. Resist, my friend! But don't even think about a gold suit.
