Are tattoos of the outline of your home state totally played out?

As a Washington girl living far, far across the country I think I really want one, but I have a strong aversion to trendy hipster tattoos. I don't want to be one of those girls with the equivalent of a tribal tramp stamp, but I do want something commemorating my Washington roots.

So what's the verdict? Over? Awesome? Anyone here have one?

Get the Rainier "R" or the Oly logo. Or something to do with Sasquatch or a goeduck. Ohhhh! or howabout Boz giving Griffy a hi-five with the Spaceneedle and a rainbow in the background. Orrrrr like St. Helens mid eruption.with a rainbow. being karate chopped by Sasquatch. with a "Boz" cut. that'd be cool.

Don't get a boring old state. there's like 50 of them but there's only one Washington. Dig?

I, and two other Slog regulars, have the Washington tattoo. The only person you need to answer to in regards to "is this played" is yourself. If you were born and raised in Washington, you can join our gang.

I wouldn't get a tattoo of anything based on what other people think. What if you got it and then the hoi polli up and change their minds? I mean, it doesn't cost the masses anything to have fickle opinions but you're the one stuck with the tattoo.

Get something you feel so strongly about that you wouldn't care if other people think it's played out or not.

    as a tattoo artist: YES.
My girlfriend has one and even she says yes.

Though, getting google street view of your house is a good tattoo.

I have a half sleeve that partially incorporates Seattle buildings, with made up buildings, with the first building I lived in when I moved here. It's not pretty (all greyscale) so sometimes I'm like "wtf?" about it- but really it's pretty fantastic for a Seattle/Washington tattoo. I love it.

Get something that has some personal attachment to you in some way.

yes, they're totally done. get one of those mustache-on-your-finger tattoos instead. those never get old.

also acceptable: outlines of mexican states or former soviet republics.

They can be interesting if you think unconventionally. A friend of my sister recently got a tattoo of the outline of Minnesota, but filled in with the Texas flag, to represent both of his homes. Think outside the box.

WA is played. Only WY is acceptable now, and then only if it's BIG -- shoulder to shoulder.

Get a discreet Space Needle somewhere, in an interesting graphical treatment. ANY tattoo that more than one person has is lame, unless it's a bleeding heart wrapped in thorns or an anchor.
