Their needs are the same as any other business's -- they need to create and open the same sorts of documents, browse the same sorts of websites, send the same sorts of emails. In fact, most non-profits are obligated by their various grants to use specialized software for reporting to various governmental agencies that doesn't even run on Macs. Non-profits are not repositories for junk that no one else wants. By giving it to a non-profit, all you're really doing is passing on your problem to them -- now THEY have to throw it away. The iBook described in the question can probably do all of the things you mentioned, so my thinking was if she can find someone with a similar request it might be a good outlet since I doubt she will get more than $100 for it online. Most non-profits aren't really interested in doing that with their time. The laptop in question is not remotely adequate to do ANY of the things we require where I work, for instance, and would sit in a pile of junk in the basement for years until somebody got around to throwing it away. I'm sorry if my tone is obnoxious, but I can tell you from much personal experience that non-profits get absolute TONS of crap "donated" to them that they don't need. Non-profits are modern businesses, possibly in the business of providing charity, but they are not charity cases themselves. You wouldn't believe the crap that shows up at our door. The giant mound of bedbug-infested clothing was a recent charmer -- we can no longer accept any clothing donations because of it. Broken car seats (I'll bet they took $100 off their taxes for that one). Outdated or broken computer equipment by the truckload -- crappy inkjet printers, old ZIP drives (remember those?) complete with an entire case of discs, fuzzed-out monitors, boxes of books with water damage (I HOPE that's water), you name it. What nonprofits want you to donate is a nice check, preferably with a fair number of zeros on it, but anything is cool.
