What is the best non-dairy ice cream out there?

Especially vanilla. It's almost my birthday and I want some ice cream, dammit!

Coconut Bliss! I have no problem with dairy and generally consume large amounts of it, but when it comes to ice cream I always buy Coconut Bliss because it is, in fact, better than dairy ice cream.

The best? Previously, I would've said the Double Rainbow Soy Cream had the best flavor, but the last batch we had tasted a bit like charcoal...not what you're looking for in an ice cream (unless your stomach hurts)

I'd probably go with So Delicious Purely Decadent Purely Vanilla. It's definitely one of my favorites. If you're up for it, try the Coconut Milk variation, which has a slight mellow, coconut aftertaste. The Luna & Larry's coconut bliss is good for that as well.

The Tempt Hempmilk vanilla is good as well, but the consistency is a little different (you need to let it soften a bit).

If you're up for it (or can talk someone into doing to for you) homemade coconut milk ice cream can't be beat. Steep some whole split vanilla beans in a little whiskey or other booze. Make a simple syrup by cooking down 1/2 cup sugar and 3/4 cup water, then once cool add it a bit at a time (tasting as you go) to 3 cups of full fat coconut milk. Once cool add the vanilla mixture and toss it all into an ice cream maker. Or freeze solid in a container and then throw it in a food processor. SO SO SO SO SO good.

Thai restaurants make an awfully nice ice cream from coconut milk that might work for you.

My favorite answer is "one I make".

You can make vanilla sorbet (a true sorbet has no dairy) at home, and if you don't have an ice cream maker you can make it like granita, frozen in a metal pan and fluffed with a fork as it freezes. Berries of any kind and pretty much any citrus also make a killer granita.

When you get some, try making a Root Beer Float with it. Coconut ice cream makes the best RBF ever!

I've been on a coconut-based non-dairy ice cream kick lately, and I think Turtle Mountain's Purely Decadent coconut flavors kill Coconut Bliss in creaminess, richness, and flavor.

But neither is as good as the coconut-based vegan options at Full Tilt Ice Cream. They're in Columbia City, White Center, and the U-District, but only their U-District location has 4 different vegan flavors at all times!!

(For non-coconut options, the Tempt hempmilk ice cream can be great if you pick the right flavor. The vanilla bean is gross, but the coffee biscotti is amazing!)
