    So comedians can make lame jokes about it. That's also why they sell hot dogs in packs of ten and hot dog buns in packs of eight. I mean, what's the deal with that? -rimshot-

    Trade unionism.

    A cartel of mediocre comedians have cooperated to make this order regularly, just so they can see each other and comment on the event during their own shows. They use this when actual humor fails them.

    I hope you paid your dues to the union before posting. If not, some guy is going to come by to break your legs for using the line without permission.

    Some people are diabetic? I know a few people who are, and while they can eat normal food, like cheeseburgers and fries, regular coke = death.

    A McDonalds double cheeseburger is about 500 calories. A can of coke is about 150. I doubt that most people ordering the combination you describe are really doing the math, but the amount of calories in the soda is still significant, especially in a fast-food place where a large coke is more like 300 calories. Also, some people claim that your body reacts differently to energy from protein and fat than it does to energy from sugar, with calories from sugar (and other carbohydrates) leading to more weight gain. I don't know if this is true, but choosing the diet coke might not be as irrational as it seems.

    Some people really just prefer the taste of Diet Coke to regular Coke. I'm not one of them, but I know several people who have that preference. Does it make sense considering the greasebombs that accompany the drink? No, but why should you expect it to?

    See the final scene of Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle for a pop culture reference--I can't find it on YouTube for you, though.

    Since the inclusion of high fructose corn syrup (8x sweeter than sugar, 1/20th the price) replacing cane sugar in Coke's recipe, regular Coca-Cola is just too friggin' sweet - I mean, pour-it-on-my-waffle sweet.

    Don't be down on anyone trying to avoid at least a few calories. Would you rather him/her order a vanilla malt?

    I don't drink diet coke because I'm on a diet. I drink it because I like the taste and I like that it has no calories or sugar, so I can waste my empty calories on things like fries (if I so choose).

    Your question is really akin to asking why someone would order a double cheeseburger and fries with a water.

    They don't like the taste of corn syrup in their drinks.

    Meat = yum.
    Cheese = yum.
    Fried potatoes & salt = yummm.
    High fructose corn syrup = BLECH !

    But the doublecheese might be overkill (unless we're talking about the Dick's Deluxe). Just get a single, FFS.

    Aside from the fact that Diet coke tastes like a toxic chemical spill (very bad for the wildlife)
    people drink diet soda because they are programmed to do so by the food industry. There is very little food in our food and even few nutrients. And the reason for this (drum roll please) it is cheaper which increases the profit margin.

    But it is much easier to blame stupid people instead of looking at an infrastructure that is fattening up our society.

    I grew up (am growing up) on diet soda. It tastes wrong to not have a diet soda...also about habit.

    Then again, I would never order a double cheeseburger or large fries (unless they were curly fries...YUM)
