    Of course.
Especially in forums such as this, where writing is really the only impression we have of someone.

And really, there are a number of things that we base our judgments of people on. Why would writing be any less appropriate than, say, style, or manners, or social circles, or line of work, etc...

    Yes. I do.

But whatever we may think, the fact is that people are judged on their writing whether they should be or not. In the same way they are judged on the way they dress, the way they talk, etc.

Writing allows a lot of room for judgment:

    1. Can you spell or at least spell check?
    2. Can you present an idea?
    3. Do you pay attention to details?

Writing says a lot about a person whether they like it or not.

Unfortunately, it seems that there is little emphasis put on writing in schools.

So long as it is other people being judged and not me then yes, it's fine. In my case, of course, it's absurd.

Especially if you're a writer, reporter, editor or otherwise employed to write well...

lt's certainly not inappropriate, since it's the best way anyone has of understanding the people they're communicating with. Does that make it appropriate, though? Yes, yes it does. While it may depend on the circumstances, the medium really doesn't matter if one wants to be understood.
