How many people will show up at the Rally to Restore Sanity/March to Keep Fear Alive?I think it's awesome that the Daily Show and the Colbert Report are actually mobilizing their fanbase to demonstrate. But, given the nature of their fans, I have to wonder how many people are actually going to show up for the party. A little context: The 9/12/09 "Taxpayer March on Washington," the highest-attended Teabagger march, had somewhere between 75,000-200,000 people in attendance. (Or 2 million, if you believe the more zealous Teabagger media representatives, which I don't.) The Million Man March actually had about 750,000 people. MLK's March on Washington had about 250,000. As you might see, sheer numbers don't necessarily equate to a successful event. The Taxpayer March on Washington accomplished nothing from a legislative viewpoint, though I suppose it did energize the Tea Party movement. The Million Man March generated lots of controversy and might have actually hurt the black community; MLK's March on Washington greatly accelerated the passage of civil rights legislation with hundreds of thousands people less. While I'm not worried that the Rally to Restore Sanity being the best attended rally ever, I am concerned that conservative pundits will portray anything less than 100,000 people as a failure and people will buy it. If you were to lay odds on how many people will show up, what would you guess? Are progressive people apathetic when it comes to demonstration? |
