  2 0 My niece in Vancouver BC was taught in science class that all mushrooms in her area can be bitten, as long as they aren't swallowed. I'm not sure whether WA is in the same bioregion as Vancouver, but if so, you're definitely safe touching. I'm still personally uncomfortable with them telling kids that it's OK to bite and spit out dangerous mushrooms, but I'm not the science expert, I guess. The most poisonous mushrooms, such as the Deathcap, or Destroying angel will be fatal by ingesting about a quarter of a teaspoon of them. And for children I assume that that amount will be even smaller. Google these mushroom names and find out just how dangerous they are, and then have a good serious word with that teacher. DO NOT TASTE ANY OLD MUSHROOM YOU FIND!!! That teacher should be slapped. Hard. From the research I've done, Amanita phalloides has been found on Vancouver Island, but not on the BC mainland and Amanita bisporigera is native to Eastern North America and very rare in central-Western N.A.
