How to humanely get rid of pesky racoons around the city neighborhood?

Don't want to shoot them. Poison is out...too many local cats. It's annoying that these nocturnal pests keep eating the dry cat food we set out for ferral cats in the neighborhood.

What creative solutions can you share, O Questionland?

Perhaps set a radio next to the cat food. I heard that as a way to keep them out of attics and what not. But the food being there might encourage them to become bold and disregard the radio.

Or put food in a box or behind a barrier that has doors smaller than the raccoons but large enough for the cats.

In putting food out in the open you are going to feed whatever shows up to eat it. If the raccoons aren't chowing down on it, then you will probably be feeding local possums, rats and mice. Those natural species are actually supposed to be there. The feral cats are the problem. By making food readily available to the natural wildlife you are attracting them to your property. The best thing for the cats would be to make efforts to domesticate them and find them homes. They are probably reproducing and adding to the feral population, which, by the way, severely impacts the local wild bird population.

Stop putting food out for feral cats. That'll solve your raccoon problem.

If you want to help feral cats, catch them and get them fixed.

All you need is a bobcat, coyote, bald eagle or wolf. Clear that problem right up, and 100% naturally.

What makes you consider the raccoons "pesky?" They have a right to be there. Where else are they supposed to go? They live in the city, because people live in the city and people make garbage that they live off of. Why are you feeding ferrel cats anyway? Or, if you feel like feeding ferrel cats, why not feed wild raccoons too?

Are the raccoons there 24-7? Learn their schedule and then leave food out at the appropriate times.

I used to have a fair amount of raccoons stopping by (in Seattle) because I was always leaving too much food outside at night for a certain cat who mostly relies on my for food. I stopped leaving food out at night and now the raccoons rarely stop by.

If you left food out in the morning would the raccoons still visit? I know some are bold and do day time food runs. Can you place the food up in some area that the raccoons couldn't reach but the cats could get to if they were really hungry?

I'd suggest feeding the ferals somewhere the raccoons can't get into. Which is going to be difficult, as raccoons can squeeze through surprisingly small spaces and feral cats don't like to be confined. But either start feeding the ferals somewhere enclosed with a very small opening, stop feeding the ferals, or accept that you're going to have raccoons around, and some of them are going to eat the feral cats.

Are you sure I can't change your mind about shooting them? A .22 caliber short is so quiet, a quick headshot and nobody will ever know! Sounds like a hand clap, it'll be your little secret. No?

How about drowning them? I know a good way to drown them?

But, alas, if I can't talk you into dispatching the disease-ridden filthy lil bastards, I'd recommend buying a live raccoon trap and trapping then moving them so they can be somebody else's problem.

Preferably, move them to a neighborhood where people are heavily armed and not afraid to kill the bastards, like my street
